Finding the program turned out to be no problem. Be sure to download the latest version, 7.39, as of this writing, August 2011. I used this link ( http://www.geocities.jp/higuchuu4/pict/MikuMikuDanceE_v739.zip ) to download my copy, but as of 9/28/11 it does not seem to work. So I have added my own downloaded Zip file to my site for you to download:

http://learnmmd.com/MikuMikuDanceE_v739.zip

It is a 5mb download ZIP file.   I SAVEd it to my Desktop. When you have it, open that zip folder and click the command “Extract All”. I just agreed to the defaults and found a new folder on my desktop containing MikuMikuDance … ready to run. I dropped the ZIP folder into the MMD folder just to keep it. There is no “installing” MMD. It sits in its folder on your desktop, ready to use. If you decide you don’t want to keep it, just drag the folder into the Recycle Bin … there is no “uninstall”.

That missing thing … a DLL file ?? There is a fix if you are running Windows XP: Go to my DOWNLOADS PAGE and get the “Update to DirectX 9″. Download that and install it … and MMD will have what it needs.

Not XP? Check the downloads at http://www.microsoft.com for a DirectX 9 update for yor operating system. Or search for the name of the missing file that MMD is asking for.

Good luck! … let us know if this works!

One more thing … There is no “install” of MMD. It just sits in its folder on your desktop. You double-click the “mikumikudance.exe” icon or make yourself a shortcut-icon for your desktop.

You may have the missing DLL file error. If so, you need to upgrade to DirectX 9. See the article about fixing this problem: http://learnmmd.com/http:/learnmmd.com/dealing-with-the-missing-dll-error/

That is a problem that I have not seen before … but it seems to be a common problem in the Gamers world. Search Google for “failed to create device” to see a bunch of listings. I did not see a FIX for the problem … but you are not alone! I will keep looking …

I contacted Kuryu. He said he needed to have DirectX 9 on his machine before MMD would run. Click the LearnMMD Step-by-Step link at the top of this page to find out how to get DirectX 9 for your XP machine.
