How do I fix the White Screen error in MMD? How do I fix MMD errors? How do I fix the side-by-side error? How do I fix the missing DLL error? How do I setup MikuMikuDance? How do I solve MMD problems? How do I install MME effects?
Hey LearnMMD readers, it`s parkeerwacht with another tutorial. This time it is a very basic one! How do you solve common issues with MMD. I am writing this article, because I have seen alot of readers saying they run into these problems. The solution is actually allready on the site. In multiple articles! Even on the download page itself! I assume most people read over them soo, I want to create this article to solve them once and for all! (hopefully)
How to solve common MMD problems, and set up MMD so you can start animating!
To start off I suggest you watch my video on the topic:
In this video I will explain everything inside this article.
Downloading MMD
You can get MMD from the downloads page or from the VPVP page (1.3 for 32-bit MMD and 1.4 for 64-bit MMD)
To download the proper version of MMD you can check if your system is 32-bit or 64-bit. (32-bit MMD will run on 64-bit machines) To look this up go to system in the control panel of Windows: (Select Large Icons in the dropdown in the top right for windows Vista-8.1 and select classic view in Windows XP)
In windows 10 you can go to settings > System > About:
Depending on your windows version the screen you will see differs, look for something that says: 64-bit operating system or X64 edition for Windows XP. on the image above you can see how it looks for 64-bit Windows 10, but all systems should have something like that.
This is how it looks for my test system: (a Virtual Machine running on my computer)
In Windows XP it doesn`t say 32-bit so if it doesn`t say X64 Edition it`s 32-bit. (I found this image online)
My test system is 32-bit so I download the 32-bit version. If it says 64-bit download the 64-bit version MMD. You can also use 32-bit MMD on these systems as well, but I prefer 64-bit MMD.
The Side-by-Side configuration error.
Common question by our readers:
I downloaded MMD but it gives me the following error: “The side-by-side configuration is incorrect” How do I fix this?
On my Windows XP test system it showed up as the following:
This is the same as the Side-by-Side configuration error.
This means you do not have the C++ Libraries installed!
To fix this error:
Download the following packages for 32-bit MMD:
- Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable Package (x86)
- Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package (x86)
for 64-bit MMD, install the following packages:
- Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package (x64)
- Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable Package (x64)
You will need to have full administrator access to the computer in order to install them.
If you still get the error after installing, reboot your computer.
The missing DLL error
Common question by our readers:
My MMD crashes on startup with the error:”This application has failed to start because D3DX9_**.DLL was not found.” Can you help me? (Different DLL`s may be shown usually D3DX9_32.DLL or D3DX9_43.DLL. I have noted different DLL`s)
For me it showed up like this:
To fix this error:
Download the following package:
DirectX End-User Runtimes (June 2010)
To install it create a new folder on the C drive named TMP. Let it extract to that folder.
Now open the folder and run: DXSETUP.EXE
This will install DirectX on your system.
If you get the following error after installing DirectX:
This error means that your graphics card or current graphics drivers, are not able to run DirectX 9. All Graphics cards from 2007 and later are supported for DirectX9. To fix this you can try to update your graphics card drivers. If that does not work you must get a DirectX9 supported Graphics card or a new computer. Since I am on a Virtual Machine I get this error as well.
The White Screen covering the Stage area:
Many users with newer Windows computers using the Intel Gen-12 processor report that MMD opens but the stage area is covered by a white screen. They can see model’s bones but cannot see the model. PLEASE SEE THIS TUTORIAL for a possible solution… seems to be a Driver issue… by adding the right Drivers, you may fix the issue!
Japanese Locale
For some features of MMD to work properly, and prevent scrabled filenamed when extracting MMD data, you must set your system locale for non-unicode applications to japanese.
To do this: go to the controll panel. (For windows 8.1 and 10 users: right click on the start button and click on controll panel) Then click on Region, under the administrative tab click on change system locale, select Japanese from that list. Click on OK and reboot the computer.
MME effects
Once you have got MMD running, you should install MME. This plugin gives you the ability to use different effects in your videos!
Download MME at our downloads page, make sure to download the corrosponding version of MME to your MMD version (64-bit MME for 64-bit MMD, and 32-bit MME for 32-bit MMD)
open the archive and copy these files to the same folder where MikuMikuDance.exe is located:
DO NOT PUT THEM IN THE DATA FOLDER! I have seen people do this. This won`t work!
If it worked it should show up in the top right corner of the MMD interface:
Soo, I got it all working. What should I do next?
Well that’s for you to decide I have collected some links that will help you get started:
Getting started
Make a music video
Render your video in HD 60fps (Little bit more advanced)
Keep the faith MMD
Upload your video to YouTube
That`s about it, for this article!
If you get a different error or if it still won’t work, please let me know by posting a comment below or on my YouTube video.
UPDATE 06-05-2016:
Rivised the DirectX part of the post and added Locale part
UPDATE 30-05-2016:
Updated the video with a revised version.

I want to ask is there anyone know how to fix crashing MMD after installing MME?
Because before installing the MME my MMD not having any error
but since I’m installing the MME and open the MMD files they lagg for a sec and then crash out of nowhere and it keeps doing it.I try many methods but still doesn’t work please help me ;w;
Have you tried unblocking the dll files?
Right click on the dll file, go to properties, unblock, and apply, do it for all three files.
I try first
there is no unblock setting at my dll properties
https://thegeekpage.com/unblock-a-file-blocked-by-windows-10/
This might show what to do better ^^
There’s no unblock checkbox like i said..
https://twitter.com/SakuraiYuu1110/status/1286944628491472896/photo/1
That’s very strange… Try unblocking the .zip file where the dll files came from, then extract and put them in the MMD folder.
I’m having a bit of a problem. I will try to enter the application and it’ll give me a message stating “The application was unable to start correctly (0xc000007b). Click OK to close the application.” I’ll then close it and try to reopen it but I’ll continue to get the same message.
Check if you have all necessary versions of MS Visual C++ Redistributives.
I Googled that error and the top result was…
The most common cause of this error is trying to load a 64 bit DLL into a 32 bit process, or vice versa. It is a missing dll.
What should i do after i downloaded DirectX?
install it
I have another problem… always when i open PMX my MME disappears- even when i re-download MMD, MME and PMX the effects are still missing- is there something i can do about it?
Sorry, but you’re not very clear. Try to explain what happens in more details.
oops sorry- so i opened pmx to fix textures in one model. I didn’t know what parts to apply texture on so i opened my MMD to see it in MME (i was too lazy to find an icon with model parts) and then i noticed that the effects are missing. It happened to me twice but i don’t remember what i did to fix it (if i waited or did i just did something). And sorry if i’m still not clear, ik that it’s not a common problem. I think i’m the only one who has a problem that type.

sorry i had a problem with posting the comment so i wrote it multiply times
Do you mean that the MME icon disappears? Or that the effects you loaded disappeared
the icon
If restarting doesn’t help I suggest redownloading MME
i did it even twice: i redownloaded the mme, mmd and the pmx
How about unblocking the dll files for MME? Does that work?
Right click>Properties>Unblock>Apply
oh, tysm! u helped me a lot!
and the whole mme the icon and the effects
Hello. i recently upgraded my computer from Win7 to Win10 and redownload MMD.
in the past i can render images in higher quality but now I can’t seem to render Images it saves it as a black screen when i change screen size.
Hello, I have an error that appears me when I open my computer in suspension mode. When I open MMD It shows me an error that says: “Unable to reset MMD” and after that the program close.
How I can solucionate it ?
Do you mean that you try to *start* MMD after coming out of suspension, and it does not work, or you suspend with MMD working, and it does not wake up properly. In the latter case the solution is simple – don’t do it.
Hi, excuse me but I can’t seem to open/load my model on either MMD or PMXE. When I try loading my model on MMD, it just keeps saying “This file is not for Ploygon Movie Maker !!”. When I try to open it on PMXE, my model won’t appear. Please help :’)
Well, maybe it *is* not a model for Polygon Movie Maker, but how would we know without seeing it?
Hi there.
I’m having a bit of trouble with MME and MMD 9.32.
MMD works fine, but as soon as I paste the MME files into the correct directory, it simply won’t start.
I have made sure that Dx9.0c and the necessary C++ Runtimes are installed, and MMD works perfectly without MME. Is anyone able to offer advice or help with this?
Thanks.
So like, when i try to open up MMD it says, “The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log or use the command-line sxstrace.exe tool for more detail.” and I’m not very big brain and need help. Please help me. I don’t know what to do-
When i try to render my MMD file to an AVI file it comes up with the cannot read showtime Dll file and “cant find it” I’ve tried many times with the hack to replace the old one but it still doesn’t work, I’ve even tried previous versions of MMD too, so far the only one that properly works is the original version, i have all the software needed to run MMD too
hello i have a trouble with a little things, actually a problem with MME. each time i try to use for example ObjectLuminous or crossluminous i load the .x file all is fine at this point but when i went in the effect mapping i only have main when a new menue should of appeared i have try uninstall and reinstall but that still didn’t work i have check every step of mme installation and i’m good i have try put the effect in another folder and see if it’s the problem but apparently no and i run out of solution if anyone could help me with that i will be very very happy i have ask almost everywhere and check if anyone have the same problem as me and i didn’t really find any solution… thanks in advance to at least take the time to read it
Hello!
So, lately I got this little problem with the effects in MMD.
When I try to load in any effect that belongs into the ”accessories” Tab, there is a red square except of an effect that shall show up.
This problem showed up the first time when I had to re-install my windows because of an virus. My MMEffect .dll files are all in the same folder as MMD, so that’s not the problem. Could someone please help me out?
Did you reinstall DirectX 9.0c and MS C++ Redistributables as well?
Excuse me, I downloaded the brand new version of MMD and it works, but is it normal that it is only in Japanese?
And I don’t know how to install MME on it. Either that makes MMD crash, or it does not appear on the right corner of the software as in previous versions.
In this regard, I tried to download MikuMikuDance MMD 9.31 (64 bits), but I can’t find it anymore.
In the tabs across the top of MMD… HELP… an option is for Japanese Mode…. you might see if you can turn that off… MMD should be in English.
You CAN download MMD 9.31×64 or regular 32-bit… LearnMMD.com still has those available.
https://learnmmd.com/MikuMikuDanceE_v931x64.zip … but you really should stick with 9.32 (or 9.32×64)
… and for MME… be sure to use the matching version of MME… regular 32-bit or the 64-bit… the MME must match your MMD (32 or 64).
Thanks for telling me how to put in English, I didn’t know.
I come to report to you the other problems I have and I think that the problem is the latest version of MME 64 bits precisely, which does not want to install on MMD 9.32 (64 bits), same on 9.31 ( 64 bit). It crashes the softwares.
I tried on basic software (so not 64 bit) and MME installs correctly and works perfectly.
And I come to the heart of my problem. I would like to do a MMD of Karma () and as we can see, the lyrics are part of the PV. Except that the only version that supports this is MMD 9.32 (64 bits) which obviously does not accept MME (64 bits). The other basic MMDs that accept MME cannot support these lyrics and crash.
I came to the conclusion that to be able to make an MMD of Karma, which is very close to my heart, I had to manage to install absolutely MME (64 bits) on MMD 9.32 (64 bits), which I do can’t do it.
I have been using MMD for a long time, this is the first time that I have had such problems, and installing MME as usual does not work.
I hope my comment is clear enough, I am French and I use Google Translate.
Thank you for helping me, nobody answered me on other forums :)
Ps : I forgot the karma link x)

Hello… I am sorry… I have no solution for you. MME v037 64-bit works well with MMD 9.32×64. You should extract the three DLLs and drop them into the MMD folder. … it works. … if it doesn’t work, I do not know what to tell you. … Is your MMD folder on your Desktop. … I download the ZIP folder… drag the ZIP to my Desktop… and then use Bandizip to extract the contents of the ZIP folder. … I do get notes of MMD with problems when the MMD folder is buried in some other Directory… try doing everything right on your Desktop.
… and… I must say… Google Translate is working pretty well!
how to solve if I can”t open the avi file in mmd ?
I use Prism Video File Converter to convert videos to .avi… and MMD can use those as background video. I am running Prism 5.28. Upon opening, I am asked to purchase… but when I click away from that pop-up, I am able to run the file converter at no charge. I hear that some new users get only a free trial period and then the software needs to be purchased. … that’s not so with MY version. You may be able to download an older version and avoid paying for anything… it used to be “free”.
Also, an older codec like “Microsoft Video 1” will yield an .avi file that MMD can run as a background video.
You mean for using as background video? Check here.
Um, sorry I don’t know where to ask,
Everytime I open the MMD, it would load for a few second and then close by itself.
> Already downloaded DirectX 9c Runtime, C++ 2008 Redistributable for 64-bit, and the C++ 2010 Redistributable for 64-bit
> Unblock my zip folder
It work just fine before my laptop got repaired, I don’t know what else to do :(
Please help me, thank you
Does the 32-bit version do it too (you’ll need respective 32-bit versions of C++ redistributables for it)?
Try to temporarily turn off your antivirus/firewall software and see if MMD works then. If so, you’ll need to whitelist it in there.
Yes the 32-bit ver do it too, I also downloaded the 32-bit version of C++
Oh okay, I’ll try to turn off my antivirus first, sorry for the very late reply;;
Umm, it still doesn’t work /sob/
But the good news is, I decided to use MMM and it works just fine T~T
Thank you
