When I first installed MikuMikuDance 7.39 on my computer, before anything else, I right clicked the MikuMikuDance.exe icon and chose “create shortcut” … which I “drag and dropped” onto the desktop as a convenient way to start the program in the future. (I like seeing the little Miku Face icon on my desktop!)
When I first double clicked the program, it did not run. An Error message said the program could not find a DxOpenNI.dll … the infamous “missing dll error!
You need to Update your DirectX files …
A quick Google Search gives you BAD information. Different sites want you to download the missing DLL file. You cannot do that. You want to download the DirectX update from Microsoft so that you get the whole set of the newest files.
I went to the Microsoft Download pages and searched for the DirectX 9 upgrade.
DirectX End-User Runtime
We now have the links to the Microsoft downloads for you. Select the proper version for your system from the boxed-area on our Downloads page. Put that file on your desktop and open it to start the DirectX 9 installation. You may delete it after you have run it.
When that installation was complete … when I double clicked MikuMikuDance.exe … it started right up!
Some Readers Report … d3dx9_32.dll still missing!
See the comments for this article … many helpful hints … and also the article about this particular DLL file: https://learnmmd.com/http:/learnmmd.com/mmd-error-d3dx9_32-dll-was-not-found/

The Word document included from the download says something about not downloading from any DLL site. Is this the same as that or is this fine and won’t affect anything?
Appreciate a reply soon.
This download is OK to use. This is an installer program that is linked to Microsoft and will get you the proper DirectX 9c update. There are other websites that let you download individual DLL files … don’t do that. Using the LearnMMD DirectX 9c update from our Downloads page will install the needed DLLs and the proper environment for them, as well. — Reggie D
I just downloaded the newest MikuMikuDance program (8.3) and everytime I go to open it, it won’t. I downloaded the DirectX thing using the link on this website and it’s still not opening. Can you please help me?
I sent you an email reply to your comment … Let’s get you going with MMD! I need to know what error message you get … and what version of Windows you are running.
Hi!
I have a problem with MMD, when i try to open the program appears a pop-up sayin something like “CreateDevice failed!”, i tried this and other metods, but isn’t working, someone can help me?
(sorry for my english, i understand english, but, i cannot speak it ._.U)
Sorry to say I don’t have an answer! … MikuMikuDance is a modern DirectX game … (without the game!) … and can suffer from the same flaws as other DirectX games. That “CreateDevice Failed” error is associated with games and gamers … I have seen it attributed to an outdated video/graphics card driver … or an inadequate cache on the video card. So … you might go online to download and install the latest drivers for you card … and then try a Google search for “CreateDevice Failed Error” and see the many entries … mostly from gamers. Good luck … Please let us know how you fixed it!

Oh wait I’m stupid ignore my other comment please because I didn’t realize there was already a solution on this site for that! My bad.
No – It is SUPER Important! Did that fix work for you? By doing the C++ Trick, I got MMD 7.94 to run on my machine … but not 7.96. I am still looking for a “fix” for 7.96.
Hello, I’m having an issue here. Earlier when I was using MMD it was opening just fine. But now when I try to open it it says “The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the apllication event log or use the command-line sxstrace.exe tool for more detail.” Is there any way I can fix this? I’ve already tried redownloading MMD yet nothing happened.

ShiotoDia .. Glad it worked for you. What operating system are you running? XP, Vista, 7?? – Thanks!
this was extremely helpful on both computers i have mmd on! thanks sooo much!
Thank you for reading the pages on LearnMMD.com!
I don’t know if I can help you. MikuMikuDance 7.39 is a DirectX software that requires at least DirectX 9 be installed on your computer. That DirectX download available from LearnMMD is a Microsoft update/upgrade to DirectX9 especially for older computers running Windows XP.If you have a newer machine and are having DirectX problems, you will want to visit the Support section at Microsoft.com. Here’s a link I found for you … http://support.microsoft.com/kb/179113
I hope that works! … Good luck … and let me know what happens.

I did a quick search on the web and found this article which seems pretty good: http://pcsupport.about.com/od/findbyerrormessage/a/d3dx9_32dll-dll.htm
It mentions getting the latest version of DirectX … and also could be graphics card driver issue … and a few things to try. Did you try the LearnMMD downloadable DirectX updater … ?
– Thanks for reading LearnMMD … email me if things still do not work: [email protected]
omg it’s works! -^^- really thanks! now i can use Kaito’s model, because my latest MMD was cannot accept any image except JPEG :D
Hello! (*^^*)
I still have the missing “dxd3_9” problem even after I downloaded the Direct X9 installment. When I clicked the file after it’s download I just got a dialogue box that asked me to run the program. (T.T) I think there was supposed to be more steps for that…. so how do I operate the installment. (I had even tried re-installing MMD ver 7.39 after I had downloaded setup file.)
I’m actually trying to install MMD in another laptop since I don’t have my older lappie anymore here, and I miss MMDing . . . (TT^TT)
Rin-Chan … Welcome back! – Missed you so much!
I did a quick search on the web and found this page dragonage.wikia.com/wiki/Forum:D3dx9_43.dll_missing
Looks like that guy solved his problem. He mentions that Windows 7 machines may be lacking the DirectX9 files required by some games … MMD is a game ?? “:o).
Please reply to let me know if this works for you!– Reggie D
When you download the DirectX 9 update from LearnMMD … that is just an installer file. When you run that program, it is supposed to get the proper files off the web and “do” the install for you. Maybe our DirectX 9 update … is out of date?? … If you find that to be true … please let me know so I can take it down. — Reggie D
