How do I fix the White Screen error in MMD? How do I fix MMD errors? How do I fix the side-by-side error? How do I fix the missing DLL error? How do I setup MikuMikuDance? How do I solve MMD problems? How do I install MME effects?
Hey LearnMMD readers, it`s parkeerwacht with another tutorial. This time it is a very basic one! How do you solve common issues with MMD. I am writing this article, because I have seen alot of readers saying they run into these problems. The solution is actually allready on the site. In multiple articles! Even on the download page itself! I assume most people read over them soo, I want to create this article to solve them once and for all! (hopefully)
How to solve common MMD problems, and set up MMD so you can start animating!
To start off I suggest you watch my video on the topic:
In this video I will explain everything inside this article.
Downloading MMD
You can get MMD from the downloads page or from the VPVP page (1.3 for 32-bit MMD and 1.4 for 64-bit MMD)
To download the proper version of MMD you can check if your system is 32-bit or 64-bit. (32-bit MMD will run on 64-bit machines) To look this up go to system in the control panel of Windows: (Select Large Icons in the dropdown in the top right for windows Vista-8.1 and select classic view in Windows XP)
In windows 10 you can go to settings > System > About:
Depending on your windows version the screen you will see differs, look for something that says: 64-bit operating system or X64 edition for Windows XP. on the image above you can see how it looks for 64-bit Windows 10, but all systems should have something like that.
This is how it looks for my test system: (a Virtual Machine running on my computer)
In Windows XP it doesn`t say 32-bit so if it doesn`t say X64 Edition it`s 32-bit. (I found this image online)
My test system is 32-bit so I download the 32-bit version. If it says 64-bit download the 64-bit version MMD. You can also use 32-bit MMD on these systems as well, but I prefer 64-bit MMD.
The Side-by-Side configuration error.
Common question by our readers:
I downloaded MMD but it gives me the following error: “The side-by-side configuration is incorrect” How do I fix this?
On my Windows XP test system it showed up as the following:
This is the same as the Side-by-Side configuration error.
This means you do not have the C++ Libraries installed!
To fix this error:
Download the following packages for 32-bit MMD:
- Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable Package (x86)
- Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package (x86)
for 64-bit MMD, install the following packages:
- Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package (x64)
- Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable Package (x64)
You will need to have full administrator access to the computer in order to install them.
If you still get the error after installing, reboot your computer.
The missing DLL error
Common question by our readers:
My MMD crashes on startup with the error:”This application has failed to start because D3DX9_**.DLL was not found.” Can you help me? (Different DLL`s may be shown usually D3DX9_32.DLL or D3DX9_43.DLL. I have noted different DLL`s)
For me it showed up like this:
To fix this error:
Download the following package:
DirectX End-User Runtimes (June 2010)
To install it create a new folder on the C drive named TMP. Let it extract to that folder.
Now open the folder and run: DXSETUP.EXE
This will install DirectX on your system.
If you get the following error after installing DirectX:
This error means that your graphics card or current graphics drivers, are not able to run DirectX 9. All Graphics cards from 2007 and later are supported for DirectX9. To fix this you can try to update your graphics card drivers. If that does not work you must get a DirectX9 supported Graphics card or a new computer. Since I am on a Virtual Machine I get this error as well.
The White Screen covering the Stage area:
Many users with newer Windows computers using the Intel Gen-12 processor report that MMD opens but the stage area is covered by a white screen. They can see model’s bones but cannot see the model. PLEASE SEE THIS TUTORIAL for a possible solution… seems to be a Driver issue… by adding the right Drivers, you may fix the issue!
Japanese Locale
For some features of MMD to work properly, and prevent scrabled filenamed when extracting MMD data, you must set your system locale for non-unicode applications to japanese.
To do this: go to the controll panel. (For windows 8.1 and 10 users: right click on the start button and click on controll panel) Then click on Region, under the administrative tab click on change system locale, select Japanese from that list. Click on OK and reboot the computer.
MME effects
Once you have got MMD running, you should install MME. This plugin gives you the ability to use different effects in your videos!
Download MME at our downloads page, make sure to download the corrosponding version of MME to your MMD version (64-bit MME for 64-bit MMD, and 32-bit MME for 32-bit MMD)
open the archive and copy these files to the same folder where MikuMikuDance.exe is located:
DO NOT PUT THEM IN THE DATA FOLDER! I have seen people do this. This won`t work!
If it worked it should show up in the top right corner of the MMD interface:
Soo, I got it all working. What should I do next?
Well that’s for you to decide I have collected some links that will help you get started:
Getting started
Make a music video
Render your video in HD 60fps (Little bit more advanced)
Keep the faith MMD
Upload your video to YouTube
That`s about it, for this article!
If you get a different error or if it still won’t work, please let me know by posting a comment below or on my YouTube video.
UPDATE 06-05-2016:
Rivised the DirectX part of the post and added Locale part
UPDATE 30-05-2016:
Updated the video with a revised version.

As soon i get the 3 DLLs of MME in my Main MMD Folder, MMD wont open anymore – no preocess,, nothing
If i remove them, it works fine again
Using MMD9.31 x64 and MME0.37 x64
Its basically annoying, since everything else works fine
https://learnmmd.com/http:/learnmmd.com/top-two-reasons-mmd-doesnt-run/
Hi! I’ve had an issue with MME specifically. I’m running MMD v9.26 on a Windows laptop, and while messing with effects in the effect manipulation panel, I randomly get an error message that says that MME reset, and then MMD closes. FYI, I have all the necessary C++ files.
Do you have a strong graphics card? Many MME effects overload simple graphics chips and weak graphics cards. I have found that you need a graphics card with at least 1Gb cache.
whenever i open MMD it instantly crashes (seen here: https://youtu.be/jR5MwKiCRJw ) and it’s been doing this since i updated my computer. How do i fix this?
If by “updated” you mean a regular Windows update, then they must probably have broken something again. Wait for a newer fix or roll back to a previous System Restore point, if you have one.
If you’ve reinstalled Windows completely, then https://learnmmd.com/http:/learnmmd.com/top-two-reasons-mmd-doesnt-run/
Yeah, the Windows 10 update completely screwed up the compatibility. Thank you sm!
when i downloaded the thing for the missing dll. It still dosent work help me
“Downloaded” or “installed”? Have you followed instructions exactly as they are stated? Check your Windows\System32 folder. If you don’t have what it takes, then you didn’t.
I have a problem loading in models. I downloaded a model (here’s the dl link: https://sta.sh/01cbbycdvkbj ), but when I tried to load it into MMD, it says, ‘This isn’t the data for Polygon Movie Maker’. What does that mean?
I downloaded the model and it is fine (that is, it *loads* fine; the model itself is quite a sloppy edit). Did you unpack the archive before trying to do anything with it? Did you use the Model Manipulation Panel to load it and not any other “Open” commands?
I have a problem with MMD, but its since I instaled MME.
When I export a model to the program, then the accessory bar disappears. I don’t know why it happens, but is really frustraiting because I need it for some effects.
My computer is a Hp Omen, with Windows 10.
Oh Sorry, I forgot that the accsesory bar is in the camera thing. Never mind.
I can not export the video, but I have downloaded the latest version
please help me
MMD used to work fine, but after a computer update, I’m suddenly getting the missing d3dx9_32.dll message. I tried to download the suggested download and it still comes up with the same message, why is that and what can I do to get it working again?
That happens, sometimes… Microsoft makes an update and screws-up MMD… and then, in a week they update their update to fix it… just wait a week or two… it might simply get better.
Check if you have that .dll in place:
I’m new to MMD, I’ve never used it. I downloaded the winRAR version of it from learnmmd.com and then extracted it. After that, I opened the folder and double-clicked the application but it said “CreateDevice Failed!”. I searched for troubleshooting and then saw this. But upon reading, the message that popped up was not discussed in this article, can you please help me solve this problem? I really want to try MMD out…
Have you installed additional required software?
https://learnmmd.com/http:/learnmmd.com/top-two-reasons-mmd-doesnt-run/
i have downloaded mme and have put 3 files into mmd’s main file but when i go to mmd i do not see the mme in the corner. I tried again and still did not succeed
please help me
(sorry for my english i am Vietnamese)
Did you download the proper 32-bt / 64-bit version for your system?
https://learnmmd.com/downloads/#Anchor_Download_MMEv037
Have you installed additional required software?
https://learnmmd.com/http:/learnmmd.com/top-two-reasons-mmd-doesnt-run/
I have a laptop running Windows 10 Creators Update and have MikuMikuDance. Recently it has popped an error without even fully launching the program (every time I try to open any PMD, PMX, or PMM files, or MMD itself, the program just shows the error) and it says “MikuMikuDance has stopped working, please close the program.” and the title bar of the error is “MikuMikuDance has stopped working.” Is there a fix, or will I just have to stick to using MikuMikuMoving? (I downloaded it because of the error.) I have the required stuff, it’s the x64 MMD (Using a x64 laptop.)
Sometimes… Microsoft sends out a Windows update that messes with MikuMikuDance… and usually, within a few days, they “update” that update thereby “fixing” MMD…. so I recommend simply hanging-in-there until it clears itself up.
There *is* a possibility that a Windows update caused this. They’ve done it at least twice, as far as I can remember; once, the situation resolved itself eventually, another time, a bugfix release for MMD was needed. Still, to make sure it *is* the case (if it was, there should be a bunch of complaints with similar symptoms in few weeks, and yours is the first of such kind this year), please clarify few points:
Were you used to use MMD successfully before this started to happen? For how long? Did you use MME as well?
If you download a fresh copy of MMD and install it into a separate folder, will it suffer from the same problem?
What new software (MMD-related or not) did you install lately?
Do you have System Restore turned on? Do you have a fresh enough System Restore point you could revert to?
mmd works but for some reason after a couple minuets my entire computer crashes and forces it to restart. what’d causing this?
Uhh.. This shows up..
[Copied text]
Cannot execute “C:\Users\*****\AppData\Local\Temp\Rar$EXa0.803\MikuMikuDanceE_v931\MikuMikuDance.exe”
Do *not* try to execute MikuMikuDance.exe from the inside of an archive. Unpack it into a folder in your hard drive first, *then* launch the program.
Still won’t work. What it’s saying:
The application failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log or use the command-line sxstrace.exe tool for more detail.
Install required MS Visual C++ Redistributable libraries and DirectX 9.0. Links are on Downloads or Troubleshooting pages.
I tried downloading and running both 64x and 86x,Both said
‘*something something something* Path not specified *something*’
Should I just give up on MMD?
…perhaps that would be the least frustrating choice.
Okay. Thank you for your help anyways,And sorry for bothering you.
So, when I load a certain model into MMD, this happens: http://fav.me/dc4ln7m
Then, it crashes.
I don’t know what to do! It’s only the specific model I keep trying to load, and there isn’t anything wrong with it! It is a large model file, yes, since it has a lot of accessories, but there’s nothing else that’s wrong with it, and I have models that load perfectly fine and are BIGGER than that model!
There are plenty of reasons for a poorly edited model to crash MMD. Some of most popular ones are:
1) Bone queue disorder. Scan your bone list and look for those that are marked red in “Parent” or “Child”(“Link to”) fields. All bones are organized into parent/child chains and it is important for parent bones always ro be above their children in the list. Reorder them with Ctrl-↑ and Ctrl-↓ keys (or respective buttons under the list) where necessary. It also may be possible that some of bones referenced as child by some other bone do not have them referenced as parent in their own fields; that must be fixed too.
2) Messed Display Pane. Bones are organized in groups (“IK”, “arms”, “legs”, etc.) that you can see in the FMP pane of MMD (on the left). Quite often an uncleaned model may have lots of empty groups and also bones mentioned several times and in several groups. That should be fixed.
3) Orphan joints. Scan your Joint list. Joints are supposed to connect rigid bodies (aka “physics”), so every joint must have its “Body A” and “Body B” field filled. If some of bodies were removed by your editing but their joints are still in place, this will crash MMD.
4) Anything else. If you checked/fixed the above and your model still crashes MMD, select the “File->PMX Info” command, run its output through Google Translate, and see what other errors your model may have. See the tutorial for more details.
Hello everybody!
My PC is an over 10years old, Windows Vista and 32bit.
~two weeks ago i’ve downloded MMD, MME, PMX, DirectX 9 and the two C++.
MMD and MME works, but PMX doesn’t. (Yes i’ve downloded the 32bit versions) When i open PMX i get 3 errows (3D doesn’t work) and the VMD doesn’t open. When i open VMD itself it looks diverent as by user on YouTube. It’s black and japanese (but i’ve downloded the english version) and i can’t use it.
First i thougt the problem is that Vista is really old, so i’ve downloded it on my Windows 10, 64bit too but there nothing works (Yes i’ve downloded the 64bit versions)
Instead of fun with MMD i got two very annoying problems (and bevor you ask: No, i haven’t downloded anything else. After downloding MMD i got frustrated because it doesn’t work, turn my PC down and after going online on the next day the following started)
Since i’ve downloded MMD my AntiVirus programm blocked “OS Attack: Microsoft SMB MS17-010 Disclosure Attempt” and a few seconds later “Attack: SMB Double Pulsar Ping” (which contains the “WannaCry” maleware). The attacks have different IP-adresses from all over the world.
Just to give you a short overview of a normal day
18:16 – attack from 186.90.180.95
18:24 – attack from 190.74.189.17
19:00 – attack from 201.217.212.98
19:02 – attack from 46.174.70.68
19:39 – attack from 52.246.236.182
19:48 – attack from 113.160.158.39
20:15 – attack from 190.144.130.2
20:18 – attack from 190.104.25.74
20:21 – attack from 134.249.238.163
Can you imagine how annoying this is? Evertime when i’m going online could be the last time. OK my Vista PC is really old and i just us it for games and internet but after the attacks it doesn’t run down anymore so i’ve to push the power button. There is nothing important on my PC but for savety i can’t use my E-Mail and Amazon anymore. I don’t know if my windows 10 PC is infected too. I just have an internetstick and it could be that it infects my other PCs too so i decided not to use them.
If you have a PC older than windows 7 think really carefully about downloding MMD. I couldn’t found a solution for this problem and other victims wrote that there isn’t one.
I’ve deleted MMD, MME and PMX immediatly. It’s really pity because i really want to use MMD. T.T
Sorry for my english (i’m german) and sorry for the long text. I just want to warn you.
>MMD and MME works, but PMX doesn’t.
For PMXE to work, you also need MS .NET Frameworks 4.5 or higher installed (if you’ve downloaded it from the dA page that our Downloads page refers to, that one should have a link to it in the description).
>When i open PMX i get 3 errows
What errors are those? In case of “missing dll” that is *not* related to the d3dx9_##.dll (you said that you’ve installed DirectX, so I assume you have that angle covered), there’s another known situation with a known solution: select all .dlls that come with PMXE, right-click and select “Properties”. If there’s a “Unlock” button in Properties panel, press it.
>When i open VMD itself it looks diverent as by user on YouTube. It’s black and japanese (but i’ve downloded the english version) and i can’t use it.
Are you still talking about PMXE or MMD here? Does it happen to a particular motion, or you’ve tried several and the problem persists in all of them? Have you tried the same motion with various models?
>Since i’ve downloded MMD my AntiVirus programm blocked “OS Attack: Microsoft SMB MS17-010 Disclosure Attempt”
I’m sorry you have this problem, but I’m not sure if it’s really connected to MMD. At least, here on LearnMMD all files are regularly checked for malware, and so far they’ve been reported to be clean. What I quick-googled about this particular attack suggests that it may come from outside and not really related to the state of your computer (that is, unless it succeeded in its work and your computer is already compromised). Is your computer a laptop? Can you temporarily connect it to a different network than the one you regularly use and see if the problem continues to appear there?
(oh, and just to make sure: does the problem persist after you’ve deleted MMD?
Yes, i’ve Frameworks 4.5.2 an i’ve unlock PMX before ziping it. I’ve done everthing exectly like i saw it on YouTube-Tuto-Videos for Windows Vista but it doesn’t work. I was so disappointed. T.T
2 Errors said the same “direct 3D doesn’t work” or something. I’ve forgotten what the third one was but it has nothing to do with missing .dll.
With VMD i mean the Icon in the PMX file with the red-haired girl where you can create your own model. Normally it should open automatic with PMX but it doesn’t. Maybe this could have something to do with the errors.
After a few days of really intensive online-searching i’ve found out that a part of OS Attack comes with .dll files on your PC and stay there even when you delate the file. It’s the frontmen of the real evil Double Pulsar Ping. I’ve an internetstick with a simcard and everytime when i’m going online i get a new IP-number but the part of OS Attack on my PC sends it to the persons behind the attacks so they can start the Double Pulsar Ping. Thanks to my AntiVirus it doesn’t work but the attacks won’t stop anymore. Connecting with a different network won’t be a good idea because it can infect them too.
Older systems like XP and Vista have a higher risk to get infected then newer ones because they don’t get updates anymore. Microsoft reacted to this problem 2017 after more than 200.000 PCs got infected in a short time and created a special update for all systems (also for older) to protect them. I didn’t know that so i haven’t installed it and now it’s to late. My Windows 10 PC has this update so the chance is high that it wasn’t infected too.
It could be that i’ve misunderstood a few things because my english may be good enough for normal communication but not for high technical texts. My last hope is the support of my AntiVirus. Maybe they know a solution for my problem.
In a few days i get a new internet modem and if my Windows 10 PC wasn’t infected i would be really, really greatful if somebody could tell me what i’ve done wrong so that MMD work. Damn it! I really want it so badly. TT.TT
