How do I fix the White Screen error in MMD? How do I fix MMD errors? How do I fix the side-by-side error? How do I fix the missing DLL error? How do I setup MikuMikuDance? How do I solve MMD problems? How do I install MME effects?
Hey LearnMMD readers, it`s parkeerwacht with another tutorial. This time it is a very basic one! How do you solve common issues with MMD. I am writing this article, because I have seen alot of readers saying they run into these problems. The solution is actually allready on the site. In multiple articles! Even on the download page itself! I assume most people read over them soo, I want to create this article to solve them once and for all! (hopefully)
How to solve common MMD problems, and set up MMD so you can start animating!
To start off I suggest you watch my video on the topic:
In this video I will explain everything inside this article.
Downloading MMD
You can get MMD from the downloads page or from the VPVP page (1.3 for 32-bit MMD and 1.4 for 64-bit MMD)
To download the proper version of MMD you can check if your system is 32-bit or 64-bit. (32-bit MMD will run on 64-bit machines) To look this up go to system in the control panel of Windows: (Select Large Icons in the dropdown in the top right for windows Vista-8.1 and select classic view in Windows XP)
In windows 10 you can go to settings > System > About:
Depending on your windows version the screen you will see differs, look for something that says: 64-bit operating system or X64 edition for Windows XP. on the image above you can see how it looks for 64-bit Windows 10, but all systems should have something like that.
This is how it looks for my test system: (a Virtual Machine running on my computer)
In Windows XP it doesn`t say 32-bit so if it doesn`t say X64 Edition it`s 32-bit. (I found this image online)
My test system is 32-bit so I download the 32-bit version. If it says 64-bit download the 64-bit version MMD. You can also use 32-bit MMD on these systems as well, but I prefer 64-bit MMD.
The Side-by-Side configuration error.
Common question by our readers:
I downloaded MMD but it gives me the following error: “The side-by-side configuration is incorrect” How do I fix this?
On my Windows XP test system it showed up as the following:
This is the same as the Side-by-Side configuration error.
This means you do not have the C++ Libraries installed!
To fix this error:
Download the following packages for 32-bit MMD:
- Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable Package (x86)
- Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package (x86)
for 64-bit MMD, install the following packages:
- Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package (x64)
- Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable Package (x64)
You will need to have full administrator access to the computer in order to install them.
If you still get the error after installing, reboot your computer.
The missing DLL error
Common question by our readers:
My MMD crashes on startup with the error:”This application has failed to start because D3DX9_**.DLL was not found.” Can you help me? (Different DLL`s may be shown usually D3DX9_32.DLL or D3DX9_43.DLL. I have noted different DLL`s)
For me it showed up like this:
To fix this error:
Download the following package:
DirectX End-User Runtimes (June 2010)
To install it create a new folder on the C drive named TMP. Let it extract to that folder.
Now open the folder and run: DXSETUP.EXE
This will install DirectX on your system.
If you get the following error after installing DirectX:
This error means that your graphics card or current graphics drivers, are not able to run DirectX 9. All Graphics cards from 2007 and later are supported for DirectX9. To fix this you can try to update your graphics card drivers. If that does not work you must get a DirectX9 supported Graphics card or a new computer. Since I am on a Virtual Machine I get this error as well.
The White Screen covering the Stage area:
Many users with newer Windows computers using the Intel Gen-12 processor report that MMD opens but the stage area is covered by a white screen. They can see model’s bones but cannot see the model. PLEASE SEE THIS TUTORIAL for a possible solution… seems to be a Driver issue… by adding the right Drivers, you may fix the issue!
Japanese Locale
For some features of MMD to work properly, and prevent scrabled filenamed when extracting MMD data, you must set your system locale for non-unicode applications to japanese.
To do this: go to the controll panel. (For windows 8.1 and 10 users: right click on the start button and click on controll panel) Then click on Region, under the administrative tab click on change system locale, select Japanese from that list. Click on OK and reboot the computer.
MME effects
Once you have got MMD running, you should install MME. This plugin gives you the ability to use different effects in your videos!
Download MME at our downloads page, make sure to download the corrosponding version of MME to your MMD version (64-bit MME for 64-bit MMD, and 32-bit MME for 32-bit MMD)
open the archive and copy these files to the same folder where MikuMikuDance.exe is located:
DO NOT PUT THEM IN THE DATA FOLDER! I have seen people do this. This won`t work!
If it worked it should show up in the top right corner of the MMD interface:
Soo, I got it all working. What should I do next?
Well that’s for you to decide I have collected some links that will help you get started:
Getting started
Make a music video
Render your video in HD 60fps (Little bit more advanced)
Keep the faith MMD
Upload your video to YouTube
That`s about it, for this article!

When I try to render to UtVideo YUV422 BT.709 DMO it shows a DirectShow window that has this error “Could not connect pVideoOut to CompressorIn”. I mean, I could render videos in the past. And I even tried to redownload all the things but it still shows the same error, help?
Strange I never had that before… Try reinstalling Ut Video
or try an older version noted in my HD rendering post here: https://learnmmd.com/http:/learnmmd.com/rendering-hd-60-fps-mmd-video/
It still doesn’t work. I tried to use the other codecs but it doesn’t work.
Suddenly whenever I load 17+ models, the MMD will not let me load anymore models and will crash into a Runtime Error and crash if I do so.
“This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way”
This is a brand new computer (four months old) with a Nvidia GTX 950 graphics card.
I do not want to have to stop using MMD because of this problem.
Please may someone help me?
17+ is the amount of models, isn’t it? I’m afraid that MMD doesn’t work with large crowds very well. Do you have 32 or 64-bit version of it?
If possible, consider breaking your video to lesser parts, each of those working with partial cast.
I run the 64-bit version of 9.26.
I think I ran about 18 models in the past on my old computer.
Thanks for telling me that MMD dosen’t work with crowds that well.
I was scared that my video card would have suffered some damage.
Good to hear that I can still use MMD.
I need help, after I installed all the things I need mmd to work it still won’t work,
it says dx3d9_43.dll is missing from my computer.
[sigh] Just read the page, will you?
“The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log or use command-line sxstrace.exe tool for more detail”
I have this problem since i upgrade my computer to window 10. Can anyone help me plz ;__;
Er… That’s what this page is *about*. Have you read it?
I know….but at first I think that i downloaded everything that list up above ,but i’m not. sorry for being silly.
I’m getting an error upon the program starting with an error box saying along the line of…
“Failed to initialize the sound device that failed to create the scene view”
…in Japanese. I’ve followed your tutorials to the letter as well as disabling all sound devices to try and circumvent the problem but no dice. Is there anyway to solve this? or has somebody found the reason?
Thanks for your time
Seems like MMD cannot use the default sound device. Go to the sound options and use your build in audio device of your PC. If you are using a USB headphone for example…
I never ran into this error soo I don’t know for sure…
Ok so I tried to download the newer version of mikumikudance, but it keeps saying theres an error! WTF?! But can someone help me out
Due to all telepaths being currently on strike, we cannot determine the nature of the error you’re getting.
So… “:o). what is that error… what does it say?
Hi,I’ve this problem https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xV4QQH_P-rQ
Can someone help me?!
Were you used to use MMD normally, or it’s your first experience? In your comment to the other page you quoted a successful video… yours?
The latest C++ libraries are not what you need for MMD. Refer to the Troubleshooting page to get correct versions that your configuration requires. You also need DirectX 9.0c.
Still, “create device failed” is a pretty bad sign. It is possible that your computer isn’t fit to run MMD. What is your video card? Try to install latest drivers for it.. and cross your fingers.
Yeah its my video, about the directx I’ve directx9c and directx11 about the driver card I’ll try it…
Mine is amd radeon hd 6310 graphics, how to update it?
Well, I’ve checked AMD 6310’s specs… it doesn’t look promising. Yet, if you want to try your luck with newest drivers, go to http://support.amd.com/en-us/download and in the Manually Select Your Driver section, select “Notebook Graphics”, “Radeon HD Series”, “Radeon HD 6xxxM Series”, and whatever your Windows version is. Download the file it offers and run it. There’s no guarantee that it’ll help you with your problem, but having fresh drivers never harms (well, usually… :P).
I realy want to use this program but whenever i open it is say Application Not Found and i douwnload diffrent ones and it says the same thing SOME1 PLEASE HELP MEH
Download the latest version, MMD 9.26 … unzip/”extract all” to open the folder. Double-click the MikuMikuDance.exe program to open MikuMikuDance. DO NOT try to install the program… it just runs from it’s folder on your desktop. See our Step-by-step instructions.
Ok i’ll try it but what if that doesnt work
Try it… You let me know what happens… we will get you going!
Hello i want to ask about of pmd editor. I have edited one model. But the body passes through the dress (a yukata) when it moves!
How I can fix this without removing body parts?
It can be achieved by adding bones to dress, or need to add physics too?
Please recommend me a good tutorial about it!
Do you mean that the dress just stays in place when the character moves, or that the dress follow the character but raising legs etc just pass through it? The latter is indeed the case of the dress not having physics. Check this tutorial and see if it helps you.
I am using a windows 7 for downloading this while on WinRaR I was trying to open but I can’t because I don’t know how (which is really embarrassing) please help me I would really appreciate it.
have you Extracted the folder inside the zip file?
You can extract it to any location you like. and run MikuMikuDance.exe
There is no installer. It’s just run and go.
Done and I am stuck at the problem where it says that “The program can’t start because d3dx9_32.dll is missing from your computer.Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.” So I installed Direct X 9.0c End user runtime but it was an agreement and nothing happened so I restarted my laptop a couple times it still did not work and now I am installing directx_Jun2010 and it’s taking 2 hours to download and I can’t wait that long. Please please please help!
Wait I have done it !!!!! My life is complete!!!!! THANK YOU SO SO SO SO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!! You have no idea how much important it was for me thank you so much!!!!!!!!!! You are the most awesome person on Earth, this is the best day of my life!!!!
No problem! I think you forgot to run DXSETUP.EXE :P
BTW: I am working on a revision of both the post and the video since there some things unclear at the moment.
Thanks! Those comments are importand to me to help and solve problems, as well as gather feedback on my post. This way I can improve them and edit them to remove any unneeded or outdated information, or add new findings that readers came with!
Whenever I load mme my mmd opens and then crashes!!
Do you have DirectX End-User Runtimes installed? (link in the page)
Can you please help me, I don’t know if this is a common problem, but i have this problem in my MME,…….when i put the 3 MME files in the same MMD folder and i try to open MMD it says ”initialize error: failed to load default effect file. please check video card capability”
a) What is your video card? Do you have an integrated Intel HD chipset, or a separate board?
b) Do you have DirectX 9.0 redistributable package installed?
it’s Intel HD and yeah i got DirectX 9.0
but i actually have directX_Jun2010_redist……..i tried to download DirectX 9.0 but it says ”you must be running windows 98, windows Millennium edition, windows 200, windows XP or windows server 2003 damily to install the directX 9.0” ……………..i have windows 10 BTW
directX_Jun2010_redist is correct – did you install it? Unpack it, then launch dxsetup.exe – it should install necessary DirectX libraries that MMD uses.
Sorry, but without a real graphic card I don’t think you have good chances at running MMD. You may try to upgrade your graphic drivers to the latest version to see if it helps, but I wouldn’t expect wonders.
mmm i see, thank you anyway :)
For some reason, my MMD refused to open completely. No error message or anything. It was working fine before, so I don’t know what made it stop now. I have an x64 laptop and tried opening both x32 and x64 versions to no avail.
Have you tried to install a fresh copy into a separate folder and see what results is produces?
I have a similar problem sometimes, it just won’t open, yet no error messages, and no process seems to be going on in the Task Manager. Although I don’t know if this is a same error as yours or not, here’s how I fixed it:
– Get an unzipped MMD (download a new one with a same version, or, if you haven’t deleted yours yet, then that can also be used)
– Extract the “Data” folder
– Delete the “Data” folder on your MMD folder and replace it with the new one you’ve just extracted.
– You might want to keep a copy of the new “data” folder as a back-up, since this problem will sometimes shows up again
MMD should be working again now. I don’t know what caused this yet, but I’ve managed to narrow down the problem to the data folder. Lend a hand here, tech-savvy teammates!
So I have a windows 10 with Cortana and additional touchscreen mode and everything works for MMD. I can run it, I can render to picture or avi file…Just..MME will not work! I have tried everything on this site and from other “suggestions” on other social media and nothing seems to work! I have tried changing the .dll files to only run with MMD, I have tried downloading the direct x end-time user stuff and other downloads you have. I am a serious fan of MMD and I would hate to give up this hobby due to it not being compatible with my laptop, is there anything you suggest?
Namely, what happened when you downloaded DirectX? Did it install all its contents into Windows, or just said there’s a higher version already or something like that and absconded?
It said I had a higher version of it
Try this link, it should work regardless of a higher version.
That didn’t work because when downloaded it asked where to store it so I tried storing it in my documents, then asked there was no folder created, do I want to create one? So I did, and it said could not create. So I created a folder in MMD right next to userfile and data, and said the same thing.
Is your MMD folder in “C:\Program Files”? If so, try to move your MMD folder to some other place and try again.
No it’s actually in my downloads folder
Ok. once again. You have the file “directx_Jun2010_redist.exe” downloaded somewhere, right? When you launch it, it asks you for a folder to unpack. Tell it to unpack into some neutral space, like C:\tmp . After it finishes, that folder will contain a DXSETUP.exe and about 150 .cab files. Then you launch DXSETUP.exe and it installs DirectX to you for real.
I tried that and it now says that the folder does not exist. I tried putting it in other folders, but all it does is the same thing it’s been doing.
It’s not supposed to act this way, but from your description it’s hard to deduce what exactly you’re doing wrong. My guess is that your Windows 10 security system is configured to prevent absolutely everything even hypothetically harmful, so your install attempts are being blocked. Without a chance to see it with own eyes, though, it’s hard to do anything.
Meanwhile, let’s start from the beginning. You said that your problem is that MME doesn’t work, and I assumed that the reason may be in lacking DirectX files, but there might be other reasons as well. First, explore your “Windows\System32” folder (I assume that in Windows 10 it is still called so, but can’t be sure, since I don’t have it myself) and see if there’s present a bunch of files called “d3dx9_NN.dll” where NN are numbers in 20-40 interval. That will clue us on whether the problem is indeed about lacking DirectX. Beside that, check for the following:
1) What is the folder where you placed MME files? Is it the same where MikuMikuDance.exe is, or one of its subfolders?
2) Both MMD and MME can be of 32-bit or 64-bit variety. Are you sure that you downloaded the matching pair of them?
I’m not real techy, so I will try to respond the best I can.
1.) I put my MME files in the same folder with MMD
2.) I check what is the best compatibility for my computer, and it said that it works best with 64-bit, so I downloaded 64-bit versions of the latest MME and MMD.
I will say though;
a.) I have tried to change my .DLL files to open with MMD (Bad idea I know) and now I don’t how to change them back.
b.) I have noticed that I have to files named “Program files” but one is that and the other is “Program files x86” which I have seen that x86-bit is just x32 bit. I noticed that all of my downloaded content goes into the “Program files x86” file. Would I need to download the regular and x32 version of MME and MMD?
a) What .dlls have you tried to change and how did you do it?
b) You said that your MMD folder is in your Downloads folder (do I understand right – the *unpacked* MMD folder resides in c:\Users\%yourname%\Downloads\ ?). What makes you concerned about “Program files” folders? What do you want written there?
a.) I change the 3 .dlls that comes with the MME zipped folder and I changed them to open with MMD, in hopes that it would just “Come on” with MMD.
b.) Yes it does reside in that folder
c.) Nothing really makes me concerned with the “Program files” I was just making predictions on what to do with this problem.
If you’re worried about .dlls being changed, simply download a clean copy of MMD archive and take them from there.
Are there “d3dx9_NN.dll” files in “Windows\System32” folder? If they are there, then I won’t bother with trying to reinstall DirectX and look for other reasons.
I will say that I have pretty much just lost all hope for it. I won’t give up on MMD itself, just try to make-do with what I have. I have been trying to work on this problem since December of last year when I received this computer. I have lost all patience and all moral for MME. I shall just wait for another update. Thank you for your service. :)
I did everything you said but I am still getting the side by side error.
Hmmm. Interesting. May I have some information about your PC and MMD?
What version of Windows are you running? Including service packs/update (For example Windows 10 Update 1511)
Are you using 64 or 32 bit Windows?
Which version of MMD do you run? I assume 9.26
Are you running 32 bit or 64 bit MMD?
Have you tried to reboot your computer after installation of the packages?
May I have a screenshot of the error message?
BTW Some info in the video is outdated, allthough I will keep the post up to date! In case some stuff changes.
I’ll answer as best as I can. I’m not very computer literate, so bear with me.
I use windows 10, and I think it is the 64 bit version. I don’t know how to check. I have the 9.26 version, and I think it is the 64 bit version. Yes, I did reboot twice after I installed the packages, and I still got the error message.
How do I add a screenshot here?
To add a screenshot just upload it to something like imigur or your preferred cloud storage server (Dropbox, Mega etc.) and post the link in the comment
to check for 32 or 64 bit windows is explained in the post. just go to settings then go to system and go to about. it should say whether your system is 32 or 64.
you can see it here: https://learnmmd.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/Win10-settings-1.png
Another way to check is to try and run 64 bit MMD if windows will give a error saying the application isn’t compatible, it means you use 32-bit.
Have you extracted the ZIP file you downloaded? If you haven’t this may be a reason why it may still give the error.
If you run 64-bit MMD make sure to also install the packages listed under 64-bit in the post!!
The side by side error should only be shown if it can’t find curtain DLL’s on the system. Soo this doesn’t say that your system is incompatible for MMD.
