How do I fix the White Screen error in MMD? How do I fix MMD errors? How do I fix the side-by-side error? How do I fix the missing DLL error? How do I setup MikuMikuDance? How do I solve MMD problems? How do I install MME effects?
Hey LearnMMD readers, it`s parkeerwacht with another tutorial. This time it is a very basic one! How do you solve common issues with MMD. I am writing this article, because I have seen alot of readers saying they run into these problems. The solution is actually allready on the site. In multiple articles! Even on the download page itself! I assume most people read over them soo, I want to create this article to solve them once and for all! (hopefully)
How to solve common MMD problems, and set up MMD so you can start animating!
To start off I suggest you watch my video on the topic:
In this video I will explain everything inside this article.
Downloading MMD
You can get MMD from the downloads page or from the VPVP page (1.3 for 32-bit MMD and 1.4 for 64-bit MMD)
To download the proper version of MMD you can check if your system is 32-bit or 64-bit. (32-bit MMD will run on 64-bit machines) To look this up go to system in the control panel of Windows: (Select Large Icons in the dropdown in the top right for windows Vista-8.1 and select classic view in Windows XP)
In windows 10 you can go to settings > System > About:
Depending on your windows version the screen you will see differs, look for something that says: 64-bit operating system or X64 edition for Windows XP. on the image above you can see how it looks for 64-bit Windows 10, but all systems should have something like that.
This is how it looks for my test system: (a Virtual Machine running on my computer)
In Windows XP it doesn`t say 32-bit so if it doesn`t say X64 Edition it`s 32-bit. (I found this image online)
My test system is 32-bit so I download the 32-bit version. If it says 64-bit download the 64-bit version MMD. You can also use 32-bit MMD on these systems as well, but I prefer 64-bit MMD.
The Side-by-Side configuration error.
Common question by our readers:
I downloaded MMD but it gives me the following error: “The side-by-side configuration is incorrect” How do I fix this?
On my Windows XP test system it showed up as the following:
This is the same as the Side-by-Side configuration error.
This means you do not have the C++ Libraries installed!
To fix this error:
Download the following packages for 32-bit MMD:
- Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable Package (x86)
- Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package (x86)
for 64-bit MMD, install the following packages:
- Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package (x64)
- Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable Package (x64)
You will need to have full administrator access to the computer in order to install them.
If you still get the error after installing, reboot your computer.
The missing DLL error
Common question by our readers:
My MMD crashes on startup with the error:”This application has failed to start because D3DX9_**.DLL was not found.” Can you help me? (Different DLL`s may be shown usually D3DX9_32.DLL or D3DX9_43.DLL. I have noted different DLL`s)
For me it showed up like this:
To fix this error:
Download the following package:
DirectX End-User Runtimes (June 2010)
To install it create a new folder on the C drive named TMP. Let it extract to that folder.
Now open the folder and run: DXSETUP.EXE
This will install DirectX on your system.
If you get the following error after installing DirectX:
This error means that your graphics card or current graphics drivers, are not able to run DirectX 9. All Graphics cards from 2007 and later are supported for DirectX9. To fix this you can try to update your graphics card drivers. If that does not work you must get a DirectX9 supported Graphics card or a new computer. Since I am on a Virtual Machine I get this error as well.
The White Screen covering the Stage area:
Many users with newer Windows computers using the Intel Gen-12 processor report that MMD opens but the stage area is covered by a white screen. They can see model’s bones but cannot see the model. PLEASE SEE THIS TUTORIAL for a possible solution… seems to be a Driver issue… by adding the right Drivers, you may fix the issue!
Japanese Locale
For some features of MMD to work properly, and prevent scrabled filenamed when extracting MMD data, you must set your system locale for non-unicode applications to japanese.
To do this: go to the controll panel. (For windows 8.1 and 10 users: right click on the start button and click on controll panel) Then click on Region, under the administrative tab click on change system locale, select Japanese from that list. Click on OK and reboot the computer.
MME effects
Once you have got MMD running, you should install MME. This plugin gives you the ability to use different effects in your videos!
Download MME at our downloads page, make sure to download the corrosponding version of MME to your MMD version (64-bit MME for 64-bit MMD, and 32-bit MME for 32-bit MMD)
open the archive and copy these files to the same folder where MikuMikuDance.exe is located:
DO NOT PUT THEM IN THE DATA FOLDER! I have seen people do this. This won`t work!
If it worked it should show up in the top right corner of the MMD interface:
Soo, I got it all working. What should I do next?
Well that’s for you to decide I have collected some links that will help you get started:
Getting started
Make a music video
Render your video in HD 60fps (Little bit more advanced)
Keep the faith MMD
Upload your video to YouTube
That`s about it, for this article!
If you get a different error or if it still won’t work, please let me know by posting a comment below or on my YouTube video.
UPDATE 06-05-2016:
Rivised the DirectX part of the post and added Locale part
UPDATE 30-05-2016:
Updated the video with a revised version.

Hello.Sooo… i downloaded MME effects the directX and the microsoft visual studio 2008 and 2010 thingys, but when i open MMd. MME effects is not there… can i have some help?…..
Did you follow the steps to install MME? You download the MME zip, you extract all files… and you drop the three new DLLs into your MMD Folder… right next to mikumikudance.exe
Yes?
— Reggie
So I’m still getting the configuration error even with both c++ installed. I’ve restarted my laptop multiple times and no change. running win 10 on a high spec gaming laptop.
Have you checked to be sure that the C++ is actually installed? Here is my list of installed C++:
hey so the mme button for mmd wont show up for me? i have the newest version of both & all the files are in the right place, i have no idea what to do here. :<
Do you have DirectX 9.0c installed?
Hey,did you got my message, why did you not email me,so how do you go on the material tab because i saw other people doing it on the internet and i do not know how you get it,can you please help me
Sorry, but your question is rather vague, I tried to re-read it several times and still don’t get what you’re trying to achieve and what gets wrong.
Sorry, I did see your earlier message but I had no answer… I was hoping that another reader might have an answer for you.
Please start your issue from the beginning. What are you doing, what model are you using… please give me a step-by-step and tell me what you are trying to do… and what’s not happening. … email me if you like: [email protected]
Please help me. I have downloaded all three programs that are required to run MMD,
I have checked and made sure that I have downloaded the correct MMD program (64), and I have also checked that those listed above are properly downloaded on my computer. However I still get this message:
The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect.
I do not know what to do anymore.
You have to *install* both C++ libraries you’ve downloaded… and since that’s the problem you’re apparently having, make sure you’ve installed DirectX as well. The process is described on this very page.
Both the C++ libraries are installed, I checked. I went to Settings > Add/Remove Program, and they are listed there. When I try and click on the downloaded items, it asks me if I want to repair or uninstall the C++ libraries. I also did install DirectX.
But for some reason, it is still not working. I restart my laptop twice, but I still get the side-by-side error message. Was there anything else I am suppose to do or missing?
Then it’s weird. You may try to uninstall them and install again, but if it doesn’t help… there’s only so much that can be done remotely, without seeing the system in person.
I NEED HELP. When I am trying to install, it’s saying to ectract files, when I do it, an error accors. WHAT AM I GOING WRONG WITH?!!
Apparently, there *is* something you’re going wrong with, you’re just not telling us what.
I need help with this error. Everytime I load an effect (MotionBlur3), MMD keeps crashing. I have both lastest version of MMD and its requirement, but I still couldn’t figure how to fix it. MMD Program doesn’t crash whenever I load the effect only when I didn’t add MME (I use the latest one as well) to the MMD file. I’m currently using windows 10.
Do you have any solution to this? Please do and thank you.
Hello! You have me confused.
“MMD Program doesn’t crash whenever I load the effect only when I didn’t add MME”
… So, if you add MME, and load the effect, MMD does not crash?
You do see this, correct?
… and then when you add MotionBlur.x MMD crashes?
Does it “crash” and quit running or is it that you get that error message and then MMD is still running OK?
— Reggie
Sorry to confuse you, I mean my MMD program along with MMEffect crash when I load the effect MotionBlur3.I tried to figure how to fix it so I removed the MME plugins from the MMD file, and when I load that same effect to MMD (without MMEffect), it doesn’t crash.
Of course, it doesn’t crash. When you try to load an effect file without an effect processor to work on it, nothing can be expected to happen.
Now. Is that the only effect you have tried with MMD, and do others work successfully? Have you followed the instructions to download and install DirectX 9.0c? Is your video card a real one, or you’re using an Intel HD graphics chipset?
Hi, I’ve followed (I think) all the instructions but everytime that I click the game icon, this thing appears (If you’re confused about the language, it’s Italian) There is a solution to that? If yes can you email me, please? Thank u
That error statement is telling you of the Side-by-Side configuration error. That means that the proper C++ is not installed. If you believe that you have already installed the proper C++… Go to your settings and “Add/Remove” programs… see if the proper C++ are actually installed. Here is the list from MY computer.
hello, i got aswell the issue side to side problem, i got so good till this:
for 64-bit MMD, install the following packages:
You will need to have full administrator access to the computer in order
by 2010 everything went well
by 2008 he says install.????.dll, i dont know how to fix it could u guys help me?
Have you run that DirectX runtime? … it installs the DirectX 9c DLLs that MMD needs. The link to it is in this chart.
I’m not sure if this is the right place to ask but….
Recently started MMD and been reading through the “Start Here” page and when I got to Page 2 and read the Accessories section, I noticed the Accessory Manipulation and Self_Shadow Manipulation setting disappear once I loaded a model. I had to drag the negi.x file (leek) to MMD to get it in. I’ve redownloaded it once and made sure I had everything installed properly and they still haven’t popped up yet. How do you fix this?
You simply have to switch between model mode and “camera” mode (where you also have access to .x accessories) by pressing the button in the lower left corner of the viewport.
hi pls help me, when i try to load an effect it did nothing even though I follow exactly what people do on youtube for ex: when I load a skybox. the sky turns into gray instead of the sky I see on the tutorial all the file extensions are correct and I download all the effects from the right source. also, I notice in effect mapping people have: main, fogmap, light map, etc and here I am only have “main”. And when I try to set effect in map effect It keep showing “post effect cannot be specified” and it show the destination of that file( i install the effect in “UserFile”), i see people have an “effect” folder but some reason i don’t have that folder when i installed mmd im pretty sure i downloaded mmd right i have all the C++ stuff and direct all install. And my PC can very handle the program as well since it can run almost anything so its not bcuz of my PC spec (just for sure). Plz help me, I’m so depressed and tired cuz I tried almost everything on the internet. I really want to use the program. i have tried to make a project and it works very well i can add motions, model, and can render it with wave file but when i try to learn about effect i realize i cant do it for some reason lol. pls help me and thank you
sry for my bad English :)
I sent you an email. I hope we can better communicate through email. Can you use any of the effects? … What Windows are you running… Win 10, 64-bit?
I haven’t received any email yet can you send to this email and yes I cant use the raycast effect but when I load it in, the model turns black and as far as I known you can fix it by a tab in effect mapping but I don’t have that so… I am running win10 64bit
I wanted to get MMD again in my pc, I installed al de c++ (2008 and 2010) and directX but when i try to run MMD it says “The application has failed to start because the side by side configuration is incorrect please see the application event log or use the command line sxstrace.exe tool for more detail.”. );
Check your installed programs to see that the proper C++ are actually installed. That side-by-side error is due to C++ issues.
I got a new Windows 11 Dell, and I reinstalled MMD, but now I recently started having issues with rendering. I keep getting a DirectX Out of Memory error whenever I try to render. I tried deleting a bunch of effects, but to no avail. I updated everything too. So I don’t understand why this is all of a sudden happening.
Wow… Windows 11. … MMD was created back in the Windows XP days. It has been updated several times so that it now runs well on Windoiws 10 machines. I have been wondering (and hoping!) if MMD will run well on a Windows 11 platform. You are the first to report on these issues. … … I hope we can get you some answers.
— Reggie
Wow really? It runs well but recently I been getting the Out of Memory errors or the occasional error of MME “failed to reset MME”. But that’s not my main issue. I made a couple renders once without problems until today. Didn’t make sense to me. If you do have answers, let me know soon. Thank you!
Windows 11 is new… and while Googling for answers to your questions, I did see quite a few OTHER errors reported. Expect to see Microsoft Windows 11 updates. … Maybe your issue will “go away” with the proper update installed. … ?
I wonder if you can run a Windows 8 or a Windoes 10 emulator on your Win 11 computer?
!
That would be called a Virtual Machine, some Linux users already use that if they need to run some windows program but the compatability layering doesn’t quite do the trick. There’s plenty of tutorials on that.
As for whether or not a VM can work in Windows 11, I don’t know, I’m simply sticking to Windows 10 for as long as I can.
If not, there’s always the option of… Ignoring what Dell wants of you and installing Windows 10 on it anyways, if you don’t need what 11 has for you. That is also an option, though doing a backup of all the non-system files is a must.
(I still have my old system SSD in my computer filled with all my old files, managed to recover my copy of Netscape Navigator on it.)
Perfect chance to mod your windows 10 install as well!
Netscape Navigator… nice! … I still use Netscape Composer once in a while.
… sometimes when I am working on a LearnMMD page, I need a little patch of custom HTML and I create it using “Komposer” as it’s available, today… I copy/paste it from Komposer “Source” view into the “text” view in the word-processor.
MMD seriously works well in my pc. I have a windows 11. the layout for the “buttons” on mmd are more rounded and is generally the same as what youd see in windows 10 pc, except everything is more rounded.
Thanks for the info… glad it is working on Windows 11!
Hi, I’m having trouble with Ray Cast Shader… It’s been more than one week and I’m desperate. I looked up everywhere. I tried everything like the “Effects” folder in Accessory. I know how to use Ray… It worked well on my old computer…. Not only Ray. Every effects that need to open a window in MMEffect doesn’t work. It won’t affect the effect with it’s .fx file.. I didn’t change any names and my computer is brand new et perfectly able to run MMD with Ray…. Please, help me !
my mmd looks like this after i exited the mmd full screen mode. how do i get the old interface back?
everything looks really small
Workin’ on an answer for you…
