Older MME Shaders rival Ray-MMD Raycast results and are easy to use!

Posted on November 17, 2020July 7, 2023 By Reggie_Dentmore 2 Comments on Older MME Shaders rival Ray-MMD Raycast results and are easy to use!

A Feature Article by Reggie Dentmore on LearnMMD.comAre the older MME Shaders still available? Is there an easier way than using Raycast to get photo-like 3D results with MMD? What shaders can I use as I work with MMD?

Older MME Shaders can yield fantastic results! Material Shader, Real Material Shader, and Real Figure Shader.

Older MME Shaders are easy to use…
… and may rival Ray-MMD Raycast results!

I had a reader ask me a question about using Real Material Shader. Me?… I have never played with Shaders. But this question got me interested and I started to explore several Shaders… Material Shader, Real Material Shader, and Real Figure Shader.

The two “Real” shaders each download in a small, less than a 1MB, file…

Download Real Material Shader from martinnx on Deviant Art

Download Real Figure Shader from martinnx on Deviant Art

Old Download link for Material Shader was from danthrox on Deviant Art
but…
I see that the links are not working for Material Shader. I have uploaded my original zip folder from 2020… you can now download that Material Shader effect zip directly from LearnMMD.com:
https://learnmmd.com/Material shader.zip
Material Shader downloads as a 29MB folder!

These are OLDER MME Shaders…

… the “newest” was last updated in 2015…
… and some files are from 2011!

My model for these tests…

The model I am using is TDA China Dress Miku Canary Ver1.00 [Golden]

Real Material Shader:

Per my reader’s inquiry, I started my research with Real Material Shader. It is EASY to use.

Easy to get wonderful results!

There is no “.X” file to load as an accessory. You simply Load an MMD model. Go to the MMEffect in the upper right of the MMD screen and select Effect Mapping. Select your model and “Set Effect”… navigate to your Real Material Shader folder and select “MentalRay Shade.fx”… and… you are done.

Older MME Shaders work well. THIS is Real Material Shader... so nice!

You need “Self _Shadow” and see that LIGHTING is critical!

You will find that you need to have the “Self_Shadow Manipulation” set to either Mode 1 or Mode 2. You can adjust the slider to get just the effect you want. … and then you will want to adjust the main lights in MMD.

Real Figure Shader:

Real Figure Shader works using the same easy method. Load your model. “Set Effect” in MME and choose “Figure Shader.fx” or “Figure Shader Dark.fx” … and… you are done!

… again… Adjust the Self_Shadow and the main lights to get “the look” that you like.

This shader was originally introduced as a method to make your MMD model look more like a plastic figurine… and you can certainly see that in the face of the model. And, see how that translucent shirt/top she is wearing STILL looks translucent. When I used either Real Material Shader or Material Shader, that translucence was lost… it went opaque.

Using Real Figure Shader, the face looks very nice but the rest of the figure was not “as nice” as it was in Real Material or Material Shader.

Material Shader:

Material Shader is a different animal.

When you unzip yor download, you will see that Material Shader has a number of sub-folders.

I tried using the effects located inside the various folders and, honestly, I did not understand what I was seeing in most of those folders… the “effect” didn’t seem to work for me except in folders FX2_PMD and FX5_PMD. … Maybe with more experimentation you will be able to figure-out the others.

Inside folder FX2_PMD…

… I found “MentalRay.fx” which, like in Real Material, was simply applied to your model. Doing so produces a beautifully shaded model with a slightly “metallic… a bronze metallic” sheen.

Inside folder FX5_PMD…

… I found “chif.fx” which, when applied to your model again gives you some beautiful shading but without the metallic sheen.

It’s ALL Good except the face, right?

Material Shader and Real Material Shader made the figure of the model look great… but they are hard on the face! … See the above pics and see the hard edges and peculiar sheens on the model’s face. When using Real Figure Shader, the face looked so nice… but the rest of the model didn’t “shape-up” as well as with the other shaders.

Using Subset-Extract, select only the face (and body skin if you wish…)

The best results I obtained was when I applied Material Shader to the entire model and then went in and selected only the face and skin to which I applied Real Figure Shader.

Doing that gives you this nice result:

This next image shows a step-by-step progression to a wonderful image…

I made a short video using Mahlazer’s “Feel the Sound” motion…

That’s it! … Enjoy using the older MME shaders!

Cool. But, as for me, Raycast is not surpassed in quality.

Yes… but you need to “learn” Raycast… you could make a CAREER out of it.
With shaders: You simply invoke the shader and you are good to go!
