Create animations, make Music Videos!
MikuMikuDance
MikuMikuDance is a free 3D animation software developed as a promotional element for fans of the Sony/Sega Vocaloid product. Featuring a high-style Japanese feel, MikuMikuDance has caught-on around the globe with tens of thousands of users and millions of MMD videos uploaded world-wide. The MMD program was introduced in Japan about 2007, without an English translation until 2010. The Japanese MMD Community is very strong and very active. They created a masterful collection of models, accessories and techniques for which all users today are most grateful!

INSTALL additional software (required) The VPVP page recommends that you download and install: Regular MikuMikuDance(32-Bit) 64-Bit MikuMikuDance It is critically important to have those packages installed in your system. MMD will not run properly without them, and will not accept higher versions of the same as a proper replacement¹. The majority of comments asking for help about MMD acting wrong will be countered with “Have you DirectX 9.0c and MS Visual C++ runtimes installed?” inquiry, and more likely than not, resolving these will resolve your problem as well. ¹ The above does not mean you have to rollback higher versions of these libraries (that you most probably have) in favor of more obsolete ones. Runtime packages are products specifically designed to be able for all versions to coexist on the same machine. |

The White Screen covering the Stage area?
Many users with newer Windows computers using the Intel Gen-12 processor report that MMD opens but the stage area is covered by a white screen. They can see model’s bones but cannot see the model. PLEASE SEE THIS TUTORIAL for a possible solution… seems to be a Driver issue… by adding the right Drivers, you may fix the issue!
We still have available for download the old 2010 release of the…
Original DirectX MMD 7.39 version:
Click the button to download the MikuMikuDanceE_v739.zip file from LearnMMD.com
MMD 7.39 runs great on XP computers and the newer systems, as well.
You can visit the VPVP page https://sites.google.com/view/evpvp/ and see what is there. MMD 7.39 used to be the Version 1.3 on that page. MMD 7.39 is removed and only the latest version of MMD is available there.
There is no “install” … just run it from your desktop. Have fun with it … Hurry back to LearnMMD.com for the information you need to get started with Miku Miku Dance.
You can Download Previous Versions of MMD…
LearnMMD.com still has EVERY version of DirectX MMD available for download… every version since 2010’s MMD 7.39 was released. You can download previous versions of MMD from LearnMMD.com
Upgrade DirectX_9 if you get the Missing DLL Error
In July of 2011, I found that I needed to upgrade to, at least, DirectX_9 … and I had a heck of a time finding it on the Microsoft Support pages.
This link at Microsoft is proven to work for all Windows versions … XP thru Windows 10 … I hope it works for you!
That DirectX runtime is now hosted on a Google-Drive page by VPVP.
IMPORTANT!
Most likely you have the higher version of DirectX installed on your computer by now. The common mistake is to update it to the latest release and expect it to solve your problems. Well, it won’t. MMD requires very specific files that are no longer distributed by default, so if you have the “missing dll problem“, you *need* to install the redistributable pack listed here. Do not worry, it won’t overwrite your newer DirectX install!
Fix the “Cannot find MMDxShow.dll” error
Download MMDxShow.dll Zip… Reggie’s personal copy!
Try this fix for the Cannot find MMDxShow.dll Error message. RENAME your old MMDxShow.dll file (if you have one) so you still have it in case this fix doesn’t work for you. Then download MMDxShow.dll from LearnMMD.com … drop it into your DATA folder inside the main MMD folder.

Additional software
Download an English version of PMX / PMD EDITOR
PMDE / PMXE is a software that lets you adjust or modify your MMD models. You can even create new models from scratch!
The last version of PMD Editor that we recommended was the 039 version by ibozo, available from his dA page. Though not perfect, it worked and was easy to use.
Today… we recommend PMXE ver. 0254f
PMXE in English: PMXE 0254f
Be sure to UNBLOCK the zip before you Extract all (just right-click the zip folder, choose “properties” and check UNBLOCK).
PLEASE NOTE: the PMD Editor is discontinued and won’t be updated past the ibozo 0139 version. PMXE is a continuation of PMDE, working with more advanced formats of MMD models and allowing loads of new possibilities! This new version of PMXE in English is more modern and offers many new features, so we recommend to learn it and preferably convert your models to .pmx format. The PMXE link above leads to a currently latest 0254f version of the editor, translated to English. If you prefer to use an unmodified Japanese version (or eager to check whether a newer release had been made since then), check PMXE’s Japanese home page, where you can always get the latest (but untranslated) release.
LearnMMD has many articles about using PMDE/PMXE!
Be a good MMDer, “Keep the Faith-MMD”.
Get MME v037 in English! … 32-bit or 64-bit!
with English Installation Instructions in English!
Reggie Dentmore has included all of the original files of the Japanese MikuMikuEffect V037 source zip and added English translation files and a new READ ME with installation instructions in English! There are also a couple of small GIF picture images to help with your installation. It’s not really MME in English … but it’s close! Included in that Read Me is the link to the Japanese source page … in case you’d like to visit and perhaps download your own MikuMikuEffects MME directly from the Japanese website.
IMPORTANT! If you use the 64-bit version of MMD, you *must*choose the 64-bit version of MME as well, and vice versa. Mismatched combinations will not work!
READ Reggie’s Article about MME V037!
To upgrade your old version of MME … simply replace the old DLL files with the new ones in this download.
LearnMMD.com still offers the previous version if you wish to own it. You can download the old Old MME v028 in English.
Mogg Face and Lips
The Mogg Project Face and Lips program helps you to create lip-syncs and VSQ files. LearnMMD has several articles that might help you to learn Face and Lips.
Blender
Blender is a 3D model-making software. It is extremely complicated and is NOT for the casual MMD beginner. You almost need a computer-science degree to understand how to work with it. If you download Blender, search online for the MANY tutorials about using Blender.
Please DO NOT ask LearnMMD for help with Blender; Blender is outside the focus of our work, here, on LearnMMD.
According to the Blender homepage, Blender is the free and open source 3D creation suite. It supports the entirety of the 3D pipeline—modeling, rigging, animation, simulation, rendering, compositing and motion tracking, even video editing and game creation.
If you download Blender, you will also want the latest version of the MMD TOOLS for Blender. Follow that link, Get MMD Tools, and read the info on that page. Again, LearnMMD offers no instruction for Blender and MMD Tools for Blender except as may be noted in our own model-making tutorials. If you download MMD Tools for Blender, please see its homepage for info, and do your research on Google and Deviant Art.
DOWNLOAD MikuMikuMoving from LearnMMD.com!!
MikuMikuMoving is a “competitor” to MikuMikuDance. MMM has some features not available in MMD. MikuMikuMoving will not play your existing PMM dance animation files … but it DOES use the same motion and model files. It also uses its own brand of effects … most of MMD’s MME effects won’t work in MMM. There is a list of MMM effects on the Moggproject homepage. … See the MMM Articles on LearnMMD … and visit the LearnMMD MMM Page.
DOWNLOAD MMM MikuMikuMoving…
Readers report difficulty downloading MMM from it’s MoggProject home page. I see in the README that Redistribution is allowed… so LearnMMD.com is hosting the latest version of MMM (latest version as of 3/5/2020)…
MikuMikuMoving_v1292… for regular, 32-bit MMM
MikuMikuMoving64_v1292… for the 64-bit version of MMM
Download GIMP 2.6 Photo and Image Manipulation Program
GIMP is a freeware program that easily creates animated GIF files. It is powerful software that is able to produce fine images rivaling the quality of Adobe Photoshop.
The buttons and controls do not follow the same scheme followed in Photoshop … so … if you are a hard-core Photoshop user like I am … you will probably become totally frustrated with GIMP! Newbies with no Photoshop experience will probably run GIMP without a problem “:o). All of the instructions and documentation is online. Try it out. Enjoy!
See my article about Creating Animated GIFs Using GIMP 2.6
Audacity 1.3.13 is now Audacity 2.0 – make WAV files!
from your music & voice!
The Audacity program is a powerful tool for all kinds of sound editing … but … for MMD users, it’s a simple tool!

Get GOOGLE SKETCHUP
and the “.X” plug-in for it:
Click the button to go to Google’s SketchUp page and get your free download of this powerful tool. Click the next button, too, to get the Plug-In that let’s you save objects for MMD.
Click the button to get the “3D Rad Exporter plug-in” for SketchUp that lets SketchUp save drawings as DirectX file objects for MMD Accessories.
I can no longer find that plugin online, so I am hosting it right here, on LearnMMD.com. Click that button to get my personal file. You will need to drop that plugin into the Plugins folder inside the actual Program folder. Go to My Computer… C drive, Programs, find your Sketchup folder, open it and see the Plugins folder. Add my file to that folder. Sketchup will now see it as a plugin.
Again… This is NOT an installable Plugin, YOU have to install it, yourself: When you download that file, you have to install it manually. Drop that .rbs file into the Plugins folder inside the actual Google/Sketchup folder inside your computer’s Programs folder. My Computer>C:>Programs>Google>Sketchup>Plugins. After doing so, you can close everything, start Sketchup, and Sketchup will now see the plugin.

Download Reggie’s DeckPanel!
Use this accessory to give your models a place to stand when the motion data starts your model somewhere above the stage-floor! Sometimes a motion data calls for your model to be on a roof or on a staircase… but YOUR stage doesn’t have those features. … your model needs a place to sit or stand… THIS is that place! See the descriptive article about using Reggie’s DeckPanel.
Download the Reggie’s Cafeteria Table and Chair!

I found this WAV file here:
… or just click the button.
There is no documentation for this file. I don’t know who made it or where it came from … but it seems to be the standard Leek-Spin song and it works just fine with the MMD program. You will find that it lasts about 4440 Frames! Save it where you can easily find it. Open a NEW file in MMD and then click FILE and LOAD WAV FILE. Select your file. You will then see it on the oscilloscope window on the MMD panel.
Have fun and Practice, Practice, Practice! “:o).

Fine movements are possible with MMD. I wanted to have quick access to various hand poses and finger positions … so I created a set of VPD files that I could use and share with you.
See: Reggie’s Hand Pose Collection for details.
Try them out! When you get my ZIP file, click EXTRACT ALL, open the new folder and Select All of my poses, and drop them into your Pose Folder inside your Users Folder in MMD. When you use them … you will see that some of the hand poses may poke a finger or thumb through a model’s sleeve. You can adjust the sleeve positions or flex the character’s wrist to get away from that. Have fun with ‘em!

Let’s Make Miku Walk! Download my WalkTest6RD.pmm animation
I created this walking motion with 5 full strides … 10 steps. See it here: Make Miku Walk!
It is pretty good … and since it is a .pmm file you can run it and edit it … have fun with it.
Please rename the file if you make changes to it.
See the write-up and learn how I created this animation on this page: Make Miku Walk!
My new WalkTest8 file shows that Walking is getting easier!
My new walk test file is cleaner than my previous motion file. See it at https://learnmmd.com/EasyWalk . I started by sliding the model back a bit so the toes are on a ruled line … registered. Then I moved out 15 frames and advanced the Center and the Left Leg IK to the next line. Registered. I COPIED the Left Leg IK position. I then went out 15 frames and PASTED that Left Leg IK data. Then I moved the Center and the Right Leg IK out to the next ruled line, registered, and COPIED the Right Leg IK position. Advanced another 15 … and so on. This created a nice sliding/skating motion. Then I went back and added some foot and hip action. Go ahead and download this little file and play it for yourself!
Hi! just wanted you guys to know that both PMD (all of them!!!!) and PMX editor download links don’t work!!!!!! Please an update. The one that works they are some basic features that are not available such as left-click drag etc. without it I can’t select a model, dress , shoes etc. Please an update.
I just tested them all, and they downloaded fine to me. Maybe your antivirus/firewall has some problems with Mediafire?
They did download fine but when I tried to open the application it would say “PMXEditor.exe has stopped working” the same happened with other links but there is one that did work but they were some main features not available but a deviantart user “jadedalicorn” has given a link and I tested it and it worked successfully so I suggest that you update the page.
Then you don’t have some of recommended software installed. All of those other links *do* matter. It may be that you have a higher version of some of it and think it’s enough – well, it’s not. They are all runtime libraries packs, so you need correct versions additionally to what you already have.
To be honest, I understood nothing (don’t judge me!)
Could we stop the fighting? I wasn’t being mean by suggesting the link and really sorry for an extremely late reply (I am travelling). If there is one thing couldn’t I understand why is my name in orange?
Try to read the Troubleshooting page, maybe it will be more comprehensible for you.
that it there is no ver of mmd working with me here the oldest old one from vpvp is working but i can not use models that idownloaded
https://learnmmd.com/http:/learnmmd.com/troubleshoot-common-error-set-up/#directx
it is do not work for windows 7 right :(
That’s impossible because it works on my laptop which is a Windows 7 Ultimate. It works perfectly but I am still learning how to use it .
Wait try downloading the latest version of mmd (9.26) it will work and if you are still getting problems refer to parkeerwacht’s article (Killerbeer has given you a link). Not really a pro on mmd but I have encountered all these problems that you are getting.
Alrighty so when I try to download it sends it automatically to Microsoft word. It also says there are missing parts. I’m not really sure what to do (I’m using a Dell Windows 10)
More details, please. What *exactly* it says and what parts does it miss? And what in nine hells MS Word has to do with it? Methinks you misunderstood something.
Hello! I have a problem, that really irritates me.
I have downloaded the newest verison of MMD, the 9.26.
When i load an effect (i installed the mme of course) nothing happening. It’s like i didn’t load anything.
I tried it with older verisons, it’s only working with the 7.39 one, and i don’t know why. But in the 7.39, the .spa and these kind of files doesn’t work on the models, so i need a newest verison sadly..
Why is the effects doesn’t work?
(Sorry for my english, it’s not my main language. I hope you can understand it and i get some help..)
Do you use the same version of MME for both installations? Which one? Are both installations of the same type, 32 or 64-bit?
Won’t work. Says that it “can’t start because d3dx9_43.3ll is missing from my computer.” Any fixes to this?
See above about installing DirectX 9.0c runtime.
umm i did but nope nothing still saying the same :(
https://learnmmd.com/http:/learnmmd.com/troubleshoot-common-error-set-up/#directx
same :(
Hi again! I got pmd and it works fine for me. Except for one thing. I save the file as a .pmd. When I open it up in mmd, the model is all white with blue eyes. I am confused.
Those would be missing textures… try this article…
https://learnmmd.com/http:/learnmmd.com/fix-model-missing-textures/
Thank you so much!
Thank you. I know how to fix texture files but this is an error. The textures look fine in pmd but when I open them up in mmd it looks weird.
Weird in what way? What kind of error?
I’ll take a screenshot.
In PMD Editor: http://i.imgur.com/hHEmcXx.jpg?1
Saved to desktop: http://i.imgur.com/GQZRZEw.jpg?1
Opened in MMD: http://i.imgur.com/pj1dDQM.jpg?1
So, check the folder with the .pmd file. Are textures in it or somewhere else?
No its just a pmd file. There are no folders.
Select the Materials tab in PMDE and scan through items. Do any of them have texture file name in the respective field?
Yes they do. The textures work perfectly in pmd. Yes the name is in the right place.
Ok. Now I fixed the issue with the body. The base shows up in mmd now I cannot get the clothing items and hair to show up. I created a file with the assets/ textures. Please help me. :(
Ok. Now I fixed the issue with the body. The base shows up in mmd now I cannot get the clothing items and hair to show up. I created a file with the assets/ textures. Please help me.
Heres what the folder looks like: http://i.imgur.com/PGn3npP.jpg?1
First try to rename face_MikuAp and hur_hair texture files to have shorter filenames (and rename them in model’s materials as well, of course). There’s a certain glitch in PMDE regarding those, and maybe that’s the case with your model (BTW, does it show something like “Saizuo-bar!” next to those textures in red font?). If that doesn’t help… Maybe you just zip the whole folder and upload it somewhere? It’d be much easier just to look at it directly.
Yes it does say Saizuo bar in red font. What does that mean. But yes I will try to put a download link and try to rename the files.
That’s the bug I suspected. PMDE requires that the summary length of texture and sphere (if used) file names be no longer than 10 symbols. PMXE is free of this bug, but then you’d be limited to .pmx format. With shortened file names you should be good.
Ok. Here is the link to download. Download button is under favorites: http://pusheenthacat.deviantart.com/art/OC-Model-With-Errors-613230575?ga_submit_new=10%253A1465067840
So what do I do?
Just as I said – rename textures with long file names.
Ok thank you.
When I renamed the shoes to a.bmp. When I try to add it in the materials and I type the name in, the texture does not appear.
Never mind I fixed it.
Yes! It works! Thank you so much!
Whenever I download pmd and I open it, it says error. Then when I try to open something, file explorer doesn’t even show up, then it makes me close it. I have the latest version of everything so..
What error? Do you have recommended Visual C++ libraries installed (same links as for MMD)? .NET Frameworks? DirectX 9.0c?
I do not have directx 9 I have 11. Oh I see the problem. I don’t want to reinstall something that is older though. Can you guys maybe try to make it so that it works with directx 11? That would mean a lot.
Install DirectX 9.0c redistributable pack, it does not require downgrading. The link is above at the top of the page.
And no, we can’t “make it” do something, we’re not program’s authors.
Ok thank you.
This is one of the worst app’s I’ve ever had. It literally resets my beautiful work when I click Play!!!
All changes you make have to be registered. Unregistered changes *will* disappear. That’s the way it works.
I have the latest version of PMXEditor downloaded, but it won’t open when I click on it. Could you please try and help me?
Have you installed all recommended libraries as well?
Yes, I have. but it’s being very stubborn. I will try to redownload them.
I already have everything on there that it needs to have. It still won’t open for me.
Well, let’s check it.
What version of PMXE do you have and where did you download it from?
What error messages, if any, does it show when you launch it?
Open your Windows’ Contol Panel and find Programs and Features section. What items containing lines like “Microsoft .NET Framework” and “Microsoft Visual C++” are there?
Open your Windows\System32 folder. Are there a bunch of files named like “d3dx9_##.dll”, where ## are numbers in 20-40 range?
Also, try to right-click the PMXE’s downloaded .zip file, select Properties, click Unblock button if it’s there, and then unpack the archive again.
I have this version. Here’s the link: http://eoscustom3d.deviantart.com/art/English-Pmx-Editor-v1-1-542100208
No error messages come up.
I have the MV (Microsoft visual) C++: 2005 Redistributable
2008 Redistributable x64 and two x86
2010 Redistributable x64 and x86.
I have already tried downloading the newest version of Microsoft .NET framework, but it said it was already installed on my computer.
There are no files with the numbers 20-40 within my System32 file.
I clicked unblock, and did as you said. It still will not open up.Is there anything else I can do?
Ok, from what you said I see that you’re missing DirectX 9.0c redistributable pack. The link is above on the page, and the Troubleshooting page contains detailed instructions. Try to install that and see if it helps.
Ok, it opens but then it gives me a bunch of error boxes, saying I’m missing a bunch of .dll;s. I already have thse, though.
Which dlls it says it misses?
Basically all of them.
All of WHAT? Names, addresses, blood types, and social security numbers.
All of the .dll’s. Sorry if I wasn’t being very clear.
You’re still not.
Which. Dlls. Does. It. Say. It. Misses.
dll’s PMXEditor says I’m missing

And then it repeats all these same error boxes.
Did you unpack the downloaded archive again (with overwrite) after applying Properties->Unblock on it? Does it recreate the folder structure or piles all files into a single folder?
*surface
I don’t believe so. Could you walk me through the steps on doing this process?
Find your downloaded archive file. Right-click on it and select Properties. There could be an Unblock button – press it.
Then unpack the archive – just in case, do it in an empty folder, never mind the one you unpacked into earlier. Then the resulting folder should contain about ten files and _data, _plugin, Lib, and NGENバッチ folders – not a hundred files in a single folder.
Try it and see if it works.
Apologies if I’m being annoying, but I saw that the side – by – side configuration was incorrect (or something) and then proceeded to download the things advised on the page. After that, it still said there was the same problem. Did I do something wrong?
Check your Windows Control Panel’s Programs and Features section. What items containing “Microsoft Visual C++” are there?
Help! I downloaded the MME v37 and I did the moving of the files as instructed but it still isnt showing the MME effect extension! I even tried downloading it again like 3 times!
Is your downloaded version of MME the same type (32 or 64-bit) as MMD?
Hi, I downloaded the stuff I need for MMD, and I just downloaded DirectXenduser just so I can have my PMX run, you see I’ve been having issues with the PMX and I have read the missing DL/Troubleshooting carefully, and now it works but now I have an error saying that shader model 3.0 or higher is required.
So the PMX won’t work unless I have the shader model 3.0 or higher
My Computer does run on windows 9 and it does work on a 64 bit.
And I got the PMX/PMD English version ( just to let you know)
And I guess my question is: How and where do I get shader model 3.0 or higher? Is it free? and will it help with PMX if I do download shader model 3.0?
I’m Sorry for all these questions, it’s just I’ve been having a bit of a problem here and there and I’m afraid I’ll end up downloading something I shouldn’t, like a scam or something bad for my computer, and I’m a beginner while trying to learn how to work MMD/PMD/PMX, and sometimes I’ll have trouble understanding some things even where to go to download certain things (besides LearnMMD)
If you could help me with this situation that would be very much appreciated, and thank you so much for taking the time to read this message.
since when is there a windows 9?
Whenever I try to open PMX Editor, it gives me a bunch of error messages. When I get through them, the program comes up, but it doesn’t work right. I have tried right clicking the file and then properties, but I don’t see a button that says Unblock. What do I need to do?
What those error messages say?
Do you have MS Visual C++ runtime libraries installed (as Downloads/Troubleshooting) pages describe, and MS Framework 4.5?
try right-clicking the .zip file, then click properties, and click unblock
It keeps on saying ‘the program can’t start because d3dx9_43.dll is missing from your computer’
what does that mean?
Go to the Troubleshooting page and follow instructions on installing DirectX 9.0c.
I don’t understand the C++ thing, I apparently have Microsoft Virtual C++ 2013. It comes up the side by side thing.
The MMD was compiled using older version of Visual C++ and it requires libraries from those releases it relies upon. No matter how higher version of Visual C++ you have installed, you *need* redistributable packages for those year versions that are listed for your version of MMD. They aren’t whole distributives of Visual Studio, just library packs to distribute along the software that was developed in its environment.
