MikuMikuDance
MikuMikuDance is a free 3D animation software developed as a promotional element for fans of the Sony/Sega Vocaloid product. Featuring a high-style Japanese feel, MikuMikuDance has caught-on around the globe with tens of thousands of users and millions of MMD videos uploaded world-wide. The MMD program was introduced in Japan about 2007, without an English translation until 2010. The Japanese MMD Community is very strong and very active. They created a masterful collection of models, accessories and techniques for which all users today are most grateful!

INSTALL additional software (required) The VPVP page recommends that you download and install: Regular MikuMikuDance(32-Bit) 64-Bit MikuMikuDance It is critically important to have those packages installed in your system. MMD will not run properly without them, and will not accept higher versions of the same as a proper replacement¹. The majority of comments asking for help about MMD acting wrong will be countered with “Have you DirectX 9.0c and MS Visual C++ runtimes installed?” inquiry, and more likely than not, resolving these will resolve your problem as well. ¹ The above does not mean you have to rollback higher versions of these libraries (that you most probably have) in favor of more obsolete ones. Runtime packages are products specifically designed to be able for all versions to coexist on the same machine. |

The White Screen covering the Stage area?
Many users with newer Windows computers using the Intel Gen-12 processor report that MMD opens but the stage area is covered by a white screen. They can see model’s bones but cannot see the model. PLEASE SEE THIS TUTORIAL for a possible solution… seems to be a Driver issue… by adding the right Drivers, you may fix the issue!
We still have available for download the old 2010 release of the…
Original DirectX MMD 7.39 version:
Click the button to download the MikuMikuDanceE_v739.zip file from LearnMMD.com
MMD 7.39 runs great on XP computers and the newer systems, as well.
You can visit the VPVP page https://sites.google.com/view/evpvp/ and see what is there. MMD 7.39 used to be the Version 1.3 on that page. MMD 7.39 is removed and only the latest version of MMD is available there.
There is no “install” … just run it from your desktop. Have fun with it … Hurry back to LearnMMD.com for the information you need to get started with Miku Miku Dance.
You can Download Previous Versions of MMD…
LearnMMD.com still has EVERY version of DirectX MMD available for download… every version since 2010’s MMD 7.39 was released. You can download previous versions of MMD from LearnMMD.com
Upgrade DirectX_9 if you get the Missing DLL Error
In July of 2011, I found that I needed to upgrade to, at least, DirectX_9 … and I had a heck of a time finding it on the Microsoft Support pages.
This link at Microsoft is proven to work for all Windows versions … XP thru Windows 10 … I hope it works for you!
That DirectX runtime is now hosted on a Google-Drive page by VPVP.
IMPORTANT!
Most likely you have the higher version of DirectX installed on your computer by now. The common mistake is to update it to the latest release and expect it to solve your problems. Well, it won’t. MMD requires very specific files that are no longer distributed by default, so if you have the “missing dll problem“, you *need* to install the redistributable pack listed here. Do not worry, it won’t overwrite your newer DirectX install!
Fix the “Cannot find MMDxShow.dll” error
Download MMDxShow.dll Zip… Reggie’s personal copy!
Try this fix for the Cannot find MMDxShow.dll Error message. RENAME your old MMDxShow.dll file (if you have one) so you still have it in case this fix doesn’t work for you. Then download MMDxShow.dll from LearnMMD.com … drop it into your DATA folder inside the main MMD folder.

Additional software
Download an English version of PMX / PMD EDITOR
PMDE / PMXE is a software that lets you adjust or modify your MMD models. You can even create new models from scratch!
The last version of PMD Editor that we recommended was the 039 version by ibozo, available from his dA page. Though not perfect, it worked and was easy to use.
Today… we recommend PMXE ver. 0254f
PMXE in English: PMXE 0254f
Be sure to UNBLOCK the zip before you Extract all (just right-click the zip folder, choose “properties” and check UNBLOCK).
PLEASE NOTE: the PMD Editor is discontinued and won’t be updated past the ibozo 0139 version. PMXE is a continuation of PMDE, working with more advanced formats of MMD models and allowing loads of new possibilities! This new version of PMXE in English is more modern and offers many new features, so we recommend to learn it and preferably convert your models to .pmx format. The PMXE link above leads to a currently latest 0254f version of the editor, translated to English. If you prefer to use an unmodified Japanese version (or eager to check whether a newer release had been made since then), check PMXE’s Japanese home page, where you can always get the latest (but untranslated) release.
LearnMMD has many articles about using PMDE/PMXE!
Be a good MMDer, “Keep the Faith-MMD”.
Get MME v037 in English! … 32-bit or 64-bit!
with English Installation Instructions in English!
Reggie Dentmore has included all of the original files of the Japanese MikuMikuEffect V037 source zip and added English translation files and a new READ ME with installation instructions in English! There are also a couple of small GIF picture images to help with your installation. It’s not really MME in English … but it’s close! Included in that Read Me is the link to the Japanese source page … in case you’d like to visit and perhaps download your own MikuMikuEffects MME directly from the Japanese website.
IMPORTANT! If you use the 64-bit version of MMD, you *must*choose the 64-bit version of MME as well, and vice versa. Mismatched combinations will not work!
READ Reggie’s Article about MME V037!
To upgrade your old version of MME … simply replace the old DLL files with the new ones in this download.
LearnMMD.com still offers the previous version if you wish to own it. You can download the old Old MME v028 in English.
Mogg Face and Lips
The Mogg Project Face and Lips program helps you to create lip-syncs and VSQ files. LearnMMD has several articles that might help you to learn Face and Lips.
Blender
Blender is a 3D model-making software. It is extremely complicated and is NOT for the casual MMD beginner. You almost need a computer-science degree to understand how to work with it. If you download Blender, search online for the MANY tutorials about using Blender.
Please DO NOT ask LearnMMD for help with Blender; Blender is outside the focus of our work, here, on LearnMMD.
According to the Blender homepage, Blender is the free and open source 3D creation suite. It supports the entirety of the 3D pipeline—modeling, rigging, animation, simulation, rendering, compositing and motion tracking, even video editing and game creation.
If you download Blender, you will also want the latest version of the MMD TOOLS for Blender. Follow that link, Get MMD Tools, and read the info on that page. Again, LearnMMD offers no instruction for Blender and MMD Tools for Blender except as may be noted in our own model-making tutorials. If you download MMD Tools for Blender, please see its homepage for info, and do your research on Google and Deviant Art.
DOWNLOAD MikuMikuMoving from LearnMMD.com!!
MikuMikuMoving is a “competitor” to MikuMikuDance. MMM has some features not available in MMD. MikuMikuMoving will not play your existing PMM dance animation files … but it DOES use the same motion and model files. It also uses its own brand of effects … most of MMD’s MME effects won’t work in MMM. There is a list of MMM effects on the Moggproject homepage. … See the MMM Articles on LearnMMD … and visit the LearnMMD MMM Page.
DOWNLOAD MMM MikuMikuMoving…
Readers report difficulty downloading MMM from it’s MoggProject home page. I see in the README that Redistribution is allowed… so LearnMMD.com is hosting the latest version of MMM (latest version as of 3/5/2020)…

Download GIMP 2.6 Photo and Image Manipulation Program
GIMP is a freeware program that easily creates animated GIF files. It is powerful software that is able to produce fine images rivaling the quality of Adobe Photoshop.
The buttons and controls do not follow the same scheme followed in Photoshop … so … if you are a hard-core Photoshop user like I am … you will probably become totally frustrated with GIMP! Newbies with no Photoshop experience will probably run GIMP without a problem “:o). All of the instructions and documentation is online. Try it out. Enjoy!

and the “.X” plug-in for it:
Click the button to go to Google’s SketchUp page and get your free download of this powerful tool. Click the next button, too, to get the Plug-In that let’s you save objects for MMD.
Click the button to get the “3D Rad Exporter plug-in” for SketchUp that lets SketchUp save drawings as DirectX file objects for MMD Accessories.
I can no longer find that plugin online, so I am hosting it right here, on LearnMMD.com. Click that button to get my personal file. You will need to drop that plugin into the Plugins folder inside the actual Program folder. Go to My Computer… C drive, Programs, find your Sketchup folder, open it and see the Plugins folder. Add my file to that folder. Sketchup will now see it as a plugin.
Again… This is NOT an installable Plugin, YOU have to install it, yourself: When you download that file, you have to install it manually. Drop that .rbs file into the Plugins folder inside the actual Google/Sketchup folder inside your computer’s Programs folder. My Computer>C:>Programs>Google>Sketchup>Plugins. After doing so, you can close everything, start Sketchup, and Sketchup will now see the plugin.

Download Reggie’s DeckPanel!
Use this accessory to give your models a place to stand when the motion data starts your model somewhere above the stage-floor! Sometimes a motion data calls for your model to be on a roof or on a staircase… but YOUR stage doesn’t have those features. … your model needs a place to sit or stand… THIS is that place! See the descriptive article about using Reggie’s DeckPanel.
Download the Reggie’s Cafeteria Table and Chair!

I found this WAV file here:
… or just click the button.
There is no documentation for this file. I don’t know who made it or where it came from … but it seems to be the standard Leek-Spin song and it works just fine with the MMD program. You will find that it lasts about 4440 Frames! Save it where you can easily find it. Open a NEW file in MMD and then click FILE and LOAD WAV FILE. Select your file. You will then see it on the oscilloscope window on the MMD panel.
Have fun and Practice, Practice, Practice! “:o).

Get my Collection of Hand Pose Files .vpd
Fine movements are possible with MMD. I wanted to have quick access to various hand poses and finger positions … so I created a set of VPD files that I could use and share with you.
See: Reggie’s Hand Pose Collection for details.
Try them out! When you get my ZIP file, click EXTRACT ALL, open the new folder and Select All of my poses, and drop them into your Pose Folder inside your Users Folder in MMD. When you use them … you will see that some of the hand poses may poke a finger or thumb through a model’s sleeve. You can adjust the sleeve positions or flex the character’s wrist to get away from that. Have fun with ‘em!

Let’s Make Miku Walk! Download my WalkTest6RD.pmm animation
I created this walking motion with 5 full strides … 10 steps. See it here: Make Miku Walk!
It is pretty good … and since it is a .pmm file you can run it and edit it … have fun with it.
Please rename the file if you make changes to it.
See the write-up and learn how I created this animation on this page: Make Miku Walk!
My new WalkTest8 file shows that Walking is getting easier!
My new walk test file is cleaner than my previous motion file. See it at https://learnmmd.com/EasyWalk . I started by sliding the model back a bit so the toes are on a ruled line … registered. Then I moved out 15 frames and advanced the Center and the Left Leg IK to the next line. Registered. I COPIED the Left Leg IK position. I then went out 15 frames and PASTED that Left Leg IK data. Then I moved the Center and the Right Leg IK out to the next ruled line, registered, and COPIED the Right Leg IK position. Advanced another 15 … and so on. This created a nice sliding/skating motion. Then I went back and added some foot and hip action. Go ahead and download this little file and play it for yourself!
Hate to say it, but I guess it’s time to abandon ship.
No matter what I do, Windows 7 has apparently fortified itself all attempts to install any version of MMD.
I’m running Skyrim grade drivers, and MMD still refuses to work right.
Nothing left to do but give up it appears.
Yes, Deviant art has a lot, but I was looking specifically for sites that have a dedicated section to mmd models. I’m looking for SPECIFICALLY sites similar to ones like this: http://www6.atwiki.jp/vpvpwiki/pages/310.html#id_d61cca6d
A quick google search usually results in deviant art pages, I do NOT want that.
The link you’re given is a dA group specifically created with the purpose of gathering all idolmaster models under the same roof. It’s highly possible that you simply won’t find a place more concentrated than that. Otherwise, your best chance is to go to that group and ask *them* where these models originally come from. If those people can’t help you, nobody can.
do u still have the d3d whatever zip
i think its d3dx9_32.dll
Hi
In MMD, how do I add a model onto a particular frame?; Also how do I make a model stop appearing on a particular frame?
For example, let’s say I want to add a model that appears on Frame 15. And then at the same time, I remove a model that existed on Frames 1-14.
Thanks
Check and uncheck the DISP display box near the model’s name in the brown area, lower left of your screen. Click Register, there, too.
This doesn’t work, when I click the display checkmark, and hit register, it still stays on the screen. The problem is that it always coexists on frame 1 unless you delete the model completely, and there doesn’t seem to be a way to get rid of that.
Any other suggestions?
Do you uncheck DISP and hit Register on *this* panel?
It’s not enough to uncheck “disp” button and register on the frame you want the model to be invisible. You also have to go back to frame 0 and uncheck “disp” and register on that frame also.
is mmd no longer in development?
We can only surmise. Yuu Higuchi’s personal web page hasn’t been touched for a couple of years; PMX Editor, on the other hand, had a couple of releases this year. Anyway, to get the wind of what happens in MMD development area one has to surf Japanese blogs regularly, and we’re too much gaijin for that. (-_-)’
… MMD still in development? … no tellin’! The last update was nearly two years ago and, at the time, it seemed to be a team-effort on the creator’s part as updates came quickly one-behind-the-other as if teammates were each posting their own tweaks until, one day, December 14, 2014, with the release of MMD 9.26, the updates ceased. … More in the works? … who knows!
I have had to redownload MMD twice already because I keep getting an error message that says “Cannot Make DirectSound!!” every time I open it. I haven’t changed anything since the initial setup and this just keeps being persistent. I have again redownloaded it a few times and have turned my computer fully off to see if that changes anything which never does. I really want to keep this program but it is being very temperamental.
Any clear help would be greatly appreciated.
That “Cannot Make DirectSound” error is NOT an MMD problem… it is a Windows/your computer’s problem. Do a Google search for that error statement and see if you can figure out a solution… You will find Microsoft forum posts as well as many other individual entries. Best of luck!
DO U GUYS HAVE A VERSION OF MMD MME FOR WINDOW 10
Yup… Regular or 64-bit… MMD 9.26 from our downloads page.
I’ve successfully downloaded the PMX editor, but when I try to open a PMX file, I get this error:
http://imgur.com/a/02de2
Is it because I don’t have Direct X? Will the newest version of Direct X work with this program? If that’s not the problem, what is?
Thanks
Alright, I think I figured out the problem, I was trying to open a PMX file in the PMD editor. So I’ve downloaded the PMX editor now, and ran into this problem:
http://imgur.com/a/G3WBs
I don’t know if it’s just my display settings, maybe the model loads, and I just cannot see it. Nothing seems to happen once I try loading a model, but at least I don’t get an error now. Any suggestions?
First, make sure that you have all the recommended supporting software installed: .NET Framework, MS Visual C++ libraries and DirectX 9.0c. Apart from the first one, you need not *latest* versions of these, but *exactly* versions it requires (don’t worry, they are redistributables, they can coexist with higher versions and don’t make you “downgrade”).
When that’s out of your way, and if a problem still persists, I would indeed start with exploring your display settings. Try to right-click your desktop and select Personalize; there should be a section about fonts that Windows uses as standard ones.
My copy of Windows 10 informs me every time that whenever I install the MS Visual 2010 C++ libraries redistributor, I get the error “A newer version of Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable has been detected on the machine.”
Are there any plans to update the compatibility of PMX editor to work more smoothly with Windows 10?; Because if not I think I might be out of luck at this point. I’ve tried running it with Windows 8, and 7 compatability, and still no luck. =/
Open Control Panel’s “Programs and Features” list and see what versions of MS Visual C++ redistributables are there. If 2010 version is there, and it is of the same 32 or 64-bit type that your MMD instance is, then it’s all good. What about MS .NET Framework? It must be no less than 4.5.
Also you can try this:
1) Right-click on PmxEditor.exe file and select Properties/Compatibility tab. Check “Disable display scaling on high DPI settings” option.
2) Check Control Panel/Display tab: if the size of default fonts is higher than 100%, downgrade it. This will affect *all* your programs, though.
As for PMXE compatibility with Windows 10, there are plenty of people who report making it work. Yours must be a configuration issue. If you’re good with Japanese, you can check PMXE’s homepage for newest releases (the current version is 0.2.3.6 of 2016/05/08), and as far as I can tell, the author *does* have a Windows 10 machine now, so problems, if there were, were probably addressed somehow. If you’d rather work with a translated version, though, 0.2.2.2 is all we have so far.
I cannot speak/read any Japanese.
I’ve tried a bunch of compatibility settings, none of them seem to work, including the font reduction. However, looking at my control panel, it seems as if I’m missing the Direct X redistributor after all that. I think that might be the problem, especially since I have the other two installed. Where can I find a redistribution that won’t give me the “Newer version is already installed” message?
Thanks for all your help, I really appreciate it.
The link in the Troubleshooting page is the one with exact instructions. On the other hand, for some reason DirectX isn’t displayed in the Control Panel as other installed programs. You can check its presence by looking inside C:\Windows\System32 folder. If you have a bunch or more files like d3dx9_##.dll numbered from 24 to 43, then you have it installed. I doubt it is the one responsible for your problem, though.
I’ll keep looking for other possible solutions, then.
Out of curiosity, you may download a Japanese version of the PMXE and install it in a separate folder, just to see if it works correctly, even if you can’t actually use it.
Alright, let’s see if I can boil down to where the problem is.
Here is a set of images that shows that I believe I have the correct programs installed. Then I open PMX editor, and I try to open up one of the PMX files. Practically nothing happens afterwards.: http://imgur.com/a/ijjcM
MMD works just fine, I’m able to open up the PMX files in there without a problem. I remember when I extracted the files with 7 Zip, I made sure to unblock it. Let me know if you have any other suggestions.
Hi Dr. No,
I’ve seen mysterious errors like that before when opening certain models. The first thing to do is to figure out if the model is doing it or the editor is doing it. Try opening the Miku_Hatsune.pmd that comes with MMD first. If that opens, you have a good indication that it’s a problem with the model and not with the editor. If it doesn’t, that’s a good indication that the problem lies with the editor.
If you do have a problem with a model, you may be able to work around it by importing it into a different file, rather than opening it directly, or by running it through an import/export cycle with something like mmd_tools for Blender.
So AFTER all that, the problem was the files I was trying to open were the problem. They were part of this bundle: http://www.deviantart.com/art/Updated-MMD-Pokemon-2016-Pack1-DL-643428334
Is there anything I can do to allow me to edit them in PMX editor? Any conversion process? I don’t think I can recreate these from scratch….
Ok, so your installed softwares are fine. All of them. So, that’s one obstacle less.
In your earlier screenshot there were disproportional fonts/panels, but in the latest batch they look to me quite workable, albeit a bit bigger than I used to. Is it still your problem, or you have it solved?
As for non-openable Pokemon models, here is your answer: http://comments.deviantart.com/1/643428334/4259102726
I didn’t even know that there’s a possibility to block a model from editing in PMXE, but here you go. Since this is not some sort of glitch but an intentional counter-edit measure, I doubt there’s a way to crack it. Not publicly known, at least.
(Other models load OK to you, is that right?)
Is there a video or guide on how to export for MMD to unreal engine 4 or is there one in the works. I’m looking for a good 3D animation software to use and this seems perfect, but the compatibility is a huge issue. I see that there are ways to get it into unity and blender though unreal does have a method it is very hard to follow along with. The videos are in a different language and blurred . Is there nothing in English of a document to follow or a video.
Thanks
What is it that you’d like to get into Unreal? Models? Motions? A quick search suggests that you can export .blend files as .fbx with Blender, which can then be imported into Unreal engine. mmd_tools at https://github.com/powroupi/blender_mmd_tools is a good way to get .pmx files into Blender.
Hello! I wanted to ask a question because i need some help,I’m pretty new at MMD and i already learn how to animate. But the thing is i can’t find many Miku models that are English for the features that i need to animate. Please help me~ (EX MODELS:Lat Miku,Api Miku… etc….)
Japanese modelers (and hence, Japanese models) are the rule, English ones are exceptions. If you want to use specific models, you will have to translate them to English yourself.
Read these articles to learn how to do it: 1, 2, 3.
Thank you so much KillerBeer~ I’m checking it out right now! ^ ^
It continues to tell me that I am missing d3dx9_32dll, I tried reinstalling it that’s what it told me to do and it still won’t open. May I have some help please?
I have windows 10 and the newest version of MMD, is there going to be another MME update? I would love to use some of the amazing effects but i don’t think the latest version of MME is compatible with the newest MMD version
MMD 9.26 and MME 0.37 are latest versions of each software respectively, and they are compatible to each other. Look up the Troubleshooting page to make sure you have all necessary supporting software installed.
PMX won’t work on my computer at all anymore and I need to edit some of my models. What do I do?
Have you tried unblocking it? See https://sites.google.com/site/mikumikubeat/pmdfaq#TOC-Q:-I-get-a-string-of-errors-on-startup-Could-not-load-file-or-assembly-
It didn’t work any of the versions I have
I didn’t even have an unblock option
I’m afraid I don’t know. Are there any error messages?
None at all, it just doesn’t open
Wait! I found one that finally works on my computer

Just in case someone else has this problem
Cool! And thanks for sharing your solution!
It continues to tell me that I am missing d3dx9_32dll, I tried reinstalling it that’s what it told me to do and it still won’t open. May I have some help please?
I found a link on your website to help me sorry, I’ll look at that.

i have a windows 10 laptop would there happen to be a version that would work on it or would there be one made
The current version *can* work with Windows 10. Just install all supporting software (DirectX and two MS Visual C++ redistributables). The links are above, and the Troubleshooting page has more detailed installation instructions.
The application failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. please see the application event lod or use command-line sxstrace.exe tool for more detail.
You most likely need to install the appropriate C++ prograsm…
