Create animations, make Music Videos!
MikuMikuDance
MikuMikuDance is a free 3D animation software developed as a promotional element for fans of the Sony/Sega Vocaloid product. Featuring a high-style Japanese feel, MikuMikuDance has caught-on around the globe with tens of thousands of users and millions of MMD videos uploaded world-wide. The MMD program was introduced in Japan about 2007, without an English translation until 2010. The Japanese MMD Community is very strong and very active. They created a masterful collection of models, accessories and techniques for which all users today are most grateful!

INSTALL additional software (required) The VPVP page recommends that you download and install: Regular MikuMikuDance(32-Bit) 64-Bit MikuMikuDance It is critically important to have those packages installed in your system. MMD will not run properly without them, and will not accept higher versions of the same as a proper replacement¹. The majority of comments asking for help about MMD acting wrong will be countered with “Have you DirectX 9.0c and MS Visual C++ runtimes installed?” inquiry, and more likely than not, resolving these will resolve your problem as well. ¹ The above does not mean you have to rollback higher versions of these libraries (that you most probably have) in favor of more obsolete ones. Runtime packages are products specifically designed to be able for all versions to coexist on the same machine. |

The White Screen covering the Stage area?
Many users with newer Windows computers using the Intel Gen-12 processor report that MMD opens but the stage area is covered by a white screen. They can see model’s bones but cannot see the model. PLEASE SEE THIS TUTORIAL for a possible solution… seems to be a Driver issue… by adding the right Drivers, you may fix the issue!
We still have available for download the old 2010 release of the…
Original DirectX MMD 7.39 version:
Click the button to download the MikuMikuDanceE_v739.zip file from LearnMMD.com
MMD 7.39 runs great on XP computers and the newer systems, as well.
You can visit the VPVP page https://sites.google.com/view/evpvp/ and see what is there. MMD 7.39 used to be the Version 1.3 on that page. MMD 7.39 is removed and only the latest version of MMD is available there.
There is no “install” … just run it from your desktop. Have fun with it … Hurry back to LearnMMD.com for the information you need to get started with Miku Miku Dance.
You can Download Previous Versions of MMD…
LearnMMD.com still has EVERY version of DirectX MMD available for download… every version since 2010’s MMD 7.39 was released. You can download previous versions of MMD from LearnMMD.com
Upgrade DirectX_9 if you get the Missing DLL Error
In July of 2011, I found that I needed to upgrade to, at least, DirectX_9 … and I had a heck of a time finding it on the Microsoft Support pages.
This link at Microsoft is proven to work for all Windows versions … XP thru Windows 10 … I hope it works for you!
That DirectX runtime is now hosted on a Google-Drive page by VPVP.
IMPORTANT!
Most likely you have the higher version of DirectX installed on your computer by now. The common mistake is to update it to the latest release and expect it to solve your problems. Well, it won’t. MMD requires very specific files that are no longer distributed by default, so if you have the “missing dll problem“, you *need* to install the redistributable pack listed here. Do not worry, it won’t overwrite your newer DirectX install!
Fix the “Cannot find MMDxShow.dll” error
Download MMDxShow.dll Zip… Reggie’s personal copy!
Try this fix for the Cannot find MMDxShow.dll Error message. RENAME your old MMDxShow.dll file (if you have one) so you still have it in case this fix doesn’t work for you. Then download MMDxShow.dll from LearnMMD.com … drop it into your DATA folder inside the main MMD folder.

Additional software
Download an English version of PMX / PMD EDITOR
PMDE / PMXE is a software that lets you adjust or modify your MMD models. You can even create new models from scratch!
The last version of PMD Editor that we recommended was the 039 version by ibozo, available from his dA page. Though not perfect, it worked and was easy to use.
Today… we recommend PMXE ver. 0254f
PMXE in English: PMXE 0254f
Be sure to UNBLOCK the zip before you Extract all (just right-click the zip folder, choose “properties” and check UNBLOCK).
PLEASE NOTE: the PMD Editor is discontinued and won’t be updated past the ibozo 0139 version. PMXE is a continuation of PMDE, working with more advanced formats of MMD models and allowing loads of new possibilities! This new version of PMXE in English is more modern and offers many new features, so we recommend to learn it and preferably convert your models to .pmx format. The PMXE link above leads to a currently latest 0254f version of the editor, translated to English. If you prefer to use an unmodified Japanese version (or eager to check whether a newer release had been made since then), check PMXE’s Japanese home page, where you can always get the latest (but untranslated) release.
LearnMMD has many articles about using PMDE/PMXE!
Be a good MMDer, “Keep the Faith-MMD”.
Get MME v037 in English! … 32-bit or 64-bit!
with English Installation Instructions in English!
Reggie Dentmore has included all of the original files of the Japanese MikuMikuEffect V037 source zip and added English translation files and a new READ ME with installation instructions in English! There are also a couple of small GIF picture images to help with your installation. It’s not really MME in English … but it’s close! Included in that Read Me is the link to the Japanese source page … in case you’d like to visit and perhaps download your own MikuMikuEffects MME directly from the Japanese website.
IMPORTANT! If you use the 64-bit version of MMD, you *must*choose the 64-bit version of MME as well, and vice versa. Mismatched combinations will not work!
READ Reggie’s Article about MME V037!
To upgrade your old version of MME … simply replace the old DLL files with the new ones in this download.
LearnMMD.com still offers the previous version if you wish to own it. You can download the old Old MME v028 in English.
Mogg Face and Lips
The Mogg Project Face and Lips program helps you to create lip-syncs and VSQ files. LearnMMD has several articles that might help you to learn Face and Lips.
Blender
Blender is a 3D model-making software. It is extremely complicated and is NOT for the casual MMD beginner. You almost need a computer-science degree to understand how to work with it. If you download Blender, search online for the MANY tutorials about using Blender.
Please DO NOT ask LearnMMD for help with Blender; Blender is outside the focus of our work, here, on LearnMMD.
According to the Blender homepage, Blender is the free and open source 3D creation suite. It supports the entirety of the 3D pipeline—modeling, rigging, animation, simulation, rendering, compositing and motion tracking, even video editing and game creation.
If you download Blender, you will also want the latest version of the MMD TOOLS for Blender. Follow that link, Get MMD Tools, and read the info on that page. Again, LearnMMD offers no instruction for Blender and MMD Tools for Blender except as may be noted in our own model-making tutorials. If you download MMD Tools for Blender, please see its homepage for info, and do your research on Google and Deviant Art.
DOWNLOAD MikuMikuMoving from LearnMMD.com!!
MikuMikuMoving is a “competitor” to MikuMikuDance. MMM has some features not available in MMD. MikuMikuMoving will not play your existing PMM dance animation files … but it DOES use the same motion and model files. It also uses its own brand of effects … most of MMD’s MME effects won’t work in MMM. There is a list of MMM effects on the Moggproject homepage. … See the MMM Articles on LearnMMD … and visit the LearnMMD MMM Page.
DOWNLOAD MMM MikuMikuMoving…
Readers report difficulty downloading MMM from it’s MoggProject home page. I see in the README that Redistribution is allowed… so LearnMMD.com is hosting the latest version of MMM (latest version as of 3/5/2020)…
MikuMikuMoving_v1292… for regular, 32-bit MMM
MikuMikuMoving64_v1292… for the 64-bit version of MMM
Download GIMP 2.6 Photo and Image Manipulation Program
GIMP is a freeware program that easily creates animated GIF files. It is powerful software that is able to produce fine images rivaling the quality of Adobe Photoshop.
The buttons and controls do not follow the same scheme followed in Photoshop … so … if you are a hard-core Photoshop user like I am … you will probably become totally frustrated with GIMP! Newbies with no Photoshop experience will probably run GIMP without a problem “:o). All of the instructions and documentation is online. Try it out. Enjoy!
See my article about Creating Animated GIFs Using GIMP 2.6
Audacity 1.3.13 is now Audacity 2.0 – make WAV files!
from your music & voice!
The Audacity program is a powerful tool for all kinds of sound editing … but … for MMD users, it’s a simple tool!

and the “.X” plug-in for it:
Click the button to go to Google’s SketchUp page and get your free download of this powerful tool. Click the next button, too, to get the Plug-In that let’s you save objects for MMD.
Click the button to get the “3D Rad Exporter plug-in” for SketchUp that lets SketchUp save drawings as DirectX file objects for MMD Accessories.
I can no longer find that plugin online, so I am hosting it right here, on LearnMMD.com. Click that button to get my personal file. You will need to drop that plugin into the Plugins folder inside the actual Program folder. Go to My Computer… C drive, Programs, find your Sketchup folder, open it and see the Plugins folder. Add my file to that folder. Sketchup will now see it as a plugin.
Again… This is NOT an installable Plugin, YOU have to install it, yourself: When you download that file, you have to install it manually. Drop that .rbs file into the Plugins folder inside the actual Google/Sketchup folder inside your computer’s Programs folder. My Computer>C:>Programs>Google>Sketchup>Plugins. After doing so, you can close everything, start Sketchup, and Sketchup will now see the plugin.

Download Reggie’s DeckPanel!
Use this accessory to give your models a place to stand when the motion data starts your model somewhere above the stage-floor! Sometimes a motion data calls for your model to be on a roof or on a staircase… but YOUR stage doesn’t have those features. … your model needs a place to sit or stand… THIS is that place! See the descriptive article about using Reggie’s DeckPanel.
Download the Reggie’s Cafeteria Table and Chair!

Because of a mix-up with cap I and lower case l, this song is often called Levan Polkka while it’s real name starts with an i … Ievan Polkka … Ievan Polka.
I found this WAV file here:
… or just click the button.
There is no documentation for this file. I don’t know who made it or where it came from … but it seems to be the standard Leek-Spin song and it works just fine with the MMD program. You will find that it lasts about 4440 Frames! Save it where you can easily find it. Open a NEW file in MMD and then click FILE and LOAD WAV FILE. Select your file. You will then see it on the oscilloscope window on the MMD panel.
Have fun and Practice, Practice, Practice! “:o).

Get my Collection of Hand Pose Files .vpd
Fine movements are possible with MMD. I wanted to have quick access to various hand poses and finger positions … so I created a set of VPD files that I could use and share with you.
See: Reggie’s Hand Pose Collection for details.
Try them out! When you get my ZIP file, click EXTRACT ALL, open the new folder and Select All of my poses, and drop them into your Pose Folder inside your Users Folder in MMD. When you use them … you will see that some of the hand poses may poke a finger or thumb through a model’s sleeve. You can adjust the sleeve positions or flex the character’s wrist to get away from that. Have fun with ‘em!
See my Write-Up on these poses here: Reggie’s Hand Pose Collection.

Let’s Make Miku Walk! Download my WalkTest6RD.pmm animation
I created this walking motion with 5 full strides … 10 steps. See it here: Make Miku Walk!
It is pretty good … and since it is a .pmm file you can run it and edit it … have fun with it.
Please rename the file if you make changes to it.
See the write-up and learn how I created this animation on this page: Make Miku Walk!
My new WalkTest8 file shows that Walking is getting easier!
My new walk test file is cleaner than my previous motion file. See it at https://learnmmd.com/EasyWalk . I started by sliding the model back a bit so the toes are on a ruled line … registered. Then I moved out 15 frames and advanced the Center and the Left Leg IK to the next line. Registered. I COPIED the Left Leg IK position. I then went out 15 frames and PASTED that Left Leg IK data. Then I moved the Center and the Right Leg IK out to the next ruled line, registered, and COPIED the Right Leg IK position. Advanced another 15 … and so on. This created a nice sliding/skating motion. Then I went back and added some foot and hip action. Go ahead and download this little file and play it for yourself!
For some reason i can’t open the new version of MMD. When I downloaded 7.39. It does work but i rather use the new version. Is there anything i can do or do i have ro use theold version?
See the troubleshooting page…
I can’t seem to download the walk tests.
You’re right… that doesn’t seem to work, anymore… No problem… see this better article about creating a walking motion…

Thank you
The Microsoft 2008 Redist is no longer available. Is there another link?
Never mind, I found another link: https://www.microsoft.com/en-au/download/details.aspx?id=15336
Mr. Vertex… I just tried BOTH the 32-bit and the 64-bit 2008 redist links on our Downloads page in that orange text box area… and they BOTH worked for me. … The link you “found” is the link from our Downloads page for the 64-bit 2008 redist. … … So… I believe it’s a non-issue, after all.
— Reggie
I need help I downloaded MME effects for my computer type and when I tried to load mmd I see it but a pop up comes and says that “Initialize Error: Fail to load default. Please check video car capability.” I follow the install but it still doesn’t work.
The magic sentence may be: “Please check video card capability”…
What model of computer are you running? make and model… … “graphics card” or an integrated chip?
Not ALL computers can run MME.
Heya, sorry again…i have a problem with the –Visual C++ 2008.exe—
When i try to download it, it says me in the screen: ¨¨ The file name, directory
name, or volume label syntax is incorrect. Ӭ what can i do? o_o
Hhhuuhh… you are using two email addresses/user names… three notes on the same subject from the same IP address…
–
I just followed the link we recommend for the 2008 C++ 64-bit… and I was at the Microsoft page… I clicked the DOWNLOAD button and I did safely download that .exe file… did you get that far??
mmh, i tried with that link and i get the same message, is weird
ooh … and about about: ¨using two email addresses/user
names… three notes on the same subject from the same IP address…¨
You mean the * Household groups * that are on my computer present?.
If so, then it is possible. I think … I have 4 and they are from my family who
are with me right now…
that is to say that I have to do
something like, delete some user/s?
It’s not that you have to delete anything, but you just sent basically the same message three times. Bombing the board with multiple messages is just yelling, it doesn’t make your plea more noticeable, more urgent… or more comprehensible, for that matter.
When you follow that link and press the big red “Download” button, it is supposed just to start downloading after a couple of seconds. None of us had seen a message as you describe it, and it is highly likely that you’re doing something wrong, but without seeing *how* you do it, it’s hard to say what exactly, and your description of the event doesn’t make it clear at all.
Mr. KB… He is running Windows 8… would that effect which version of C++ he is fed from Microsoft? … Maybe that link is for Win 10 users??
— Reggie
To my knowledge, no. The version of the redistributable depends on the Visual Studio C++ version the software (MMD in this case) was compiled with. The *search* site might suggest you different versions depending on your OS, but straight links are straight. I used to download from those on my Win7 home computer, and I just checked them on my work Win10 laptop, they all function as they should.
oooh, i´m so sorry…sometimes i dont see my own comments and i get scared soo i try again and i comment again…
sorry, i will stop
and before i go
is there any chance to delete that comment?-
i dont like that random ppl in the internet see my gmail names qwp
OK… I edited KillerBeer’s comment to remove your gmail emails.
Multiple users… no problem… just an observation… we get some guys trying to infiltrate our system… fine if you have multiple accounts on the same IP. Our “system” recognizes that your IP already has approved comments and so auto-approves your comments.
Heya, mmh…i have a problem with the Visual C++ 2008.exe.
When i try to download it (To make MME work correctly).
A little screen appears and say: ¨File name, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect.¨
What can i do? o_o
Hello. The file —Visual C++ 2008—-, don´t work for me..
When i try to download it,n my screen says: File name, directory
name, or volume label syntax is incorrect…
i don´t know why that…¿Any solution?
A Detail: I´m 64 bits
Hello. Someone help me please! I can´t download MME, i´m trying to get it like a 1 month but i can´t!
when i open MMD, i don´t see the MME Tab! And i try of all, i download the 64 but package and it don´t work…
i try with the 32 bits, and same thing. Help pleaseee :,c
“installing” MME is simple. … You download the appropriate MME (32-bit or 64-bit to match your MMD)… the latest version, v037… You EXTRACT that ZIP folder… and you drop the three DLL files into your main MMD folder (right next to your mikumikudance.exe)… and … it “works”… … unless you have some computer or graphics card issue. … but I have run MME on Windows XP and Windows VISTA… and now am running it on Windows 10… and it has always worked for me.
–
Tell us about your computer… what brand and model number… and do you have a graphics card or is it an integrated graphics chip?
— Reggie
Before leaving the MMDC, i was have the MME and worked very good
but now i re-install MMD and MME and it dint work :,D
Please explain every detail of what you did and how you did it, and maybe we can help you. Or maybe just see the troubleshooting page. … and maybe my “Success with Windows 10” article.
I have windows 8, mmh.
As I said, before leaving the MMD community … The MME was perfect for me, I should not even have installed the packages. (My device is 64 bit) -. In this year I have seen a lot of tutorials and I noticed that they all said that now it was necessary to install those packages … so I have followed them.
Install each file correctly, drag the DLL’s to the MMD folder just as it always. At the time of opening the [MMD] program … I checked correctly, but the MME table was not showing, i reload to much – but nothing.
I have installed both 32-bit programs – (Also the software files). But the problem / error continues … I have also restarted my pc and left it for a while, and nothing happens either.
I have repeated the same steps with some previous versions
of MMD, but it is still the same…And let’s say that downloading a file from the MMD program already installed with the MME has not worked either.
It is the first time that this error has come to me from all the years that I have been using MMD
Windows 8… maybe try to run an older version of MMD? … MMD 9.26×64 was “the one” between December 2014 thru December 2017. … and then MMD 9.31×64 was “the one” from Feb of 2018 thru December of 2019, when the current 9.32 was released.
DOWNLOAD MMD 9.26×64
DOWNLOAD MMD 9.31×64
LearnMMD has an article listing ALL of the versions. … and LearnMMD still has ALL of those zips available. You can download any one that you want… just adjust the standard URL.
Let me know if one of those works for you.
best of luck!

Idk what is going on
Which versions did you try?
I try both c,:
*I tough i reply, i- ._.*
well: I try both link that you give me, i try others like 7.39 from ahead :,D
oh nvm
sometimes i dont see my comments-
Is there any updated version that using newer graphic API like directx 12 or VULCAN ? seems like the latest version still using the old directx 9 and not optimized. Im running MMD with gtx 1660Ti and my GPU only use 50-55% usage power when using effect like Ray-MMD and the others.
The possibility of that seems distant and totally hypothetic. Yuu Higuchi has apparently departed from MMD development, and few recent updates that had been made (presumably, by a team of followers) only addressed minor issues with Windows 10, but no major overhaul. It *may* be possible that someone will make a drastic change someday, but no rumors suggesting that currently exist. We have what we have.
oof where do I download MME? I can’t find it
Right here on this page.
Hey!
I just have a problem with VMD spectrum thing and whenever I try to open it, it’s showing me a DirectSound error, I click OK and whenever I try to open a wav file it also shows me the same error I got at first, I’m using windows 10 and I really want to solve this, have any idea of how to fix it?
It doesn’t work with Win 10, try using it on an old Win 7 or Win 8 system that someone might still have lying around somewhere,
Who owns MMD? will it ever go past 9.32? I’d really love to see a more modern version with better support and even nicer UI.
Yu Higuchi created the MikuMikuDance program. Back in 2010, he released the first DirectX version in English of the program as MMD 7.39. MikuMikuDance has a home page, the VPVP page… Vocaloid Promotion Video Project…
There, you will see a couple of the older versions available and what they call “1.3 MikuMikuDance (DirectX9 Ver.)”, which is the latest MMD version 32-bit… and for 64-bit: 1.4 MikuMikuDance(64bitOS Ver)
LearnMMD.com hosts those latest versions for download from our Downloads page. I often check the VPVP page to be sure that we have the latest version for you.
Years ago, Yu Higuchi had said he would not be updating MMD… but there seems to be a team that DOES add an update when MMD requires it as the Windows OS evolves.
… as far as a new UI… probably not happening. MMD is what it is. The GUI has been modified a few times since 2010, but only to add new tools or new functions… not to make the GUI “easier” to use.
Okay, I’m back with an update for my previous comment on April 10th stating how my MMD just won’t open randomly. I guess you could consider this a ‘fix’ of some sort? Anyways, I tend to keep my old folders of MMD that stopped working so I can keep all my models and effects in them. So, I went to the data folder with my newest MMD folder (that runs MMD without any issues) and copied everything in the data folder and made a backup folder of the data in the old MMD folder (to my desktop), deleted and replaced the contents with the copied data from the one that works and I tested it out by running MMD from the old one…and it opened with no problems!
Honestly, I’m still not sure what caused the application to just stop opening or responding whenever I clicked on it…but I figured out how to get the older ones to work again! Sorry, I just wanted to update you all about my findings. Also, I have a hard time wording things so if my writing is all cluttered then I apologize–
how do u do that…
i have the same problem

Have you tried unblocking the dll file?
Right click on d3d9.dll, go to properties, unblock, and apply.
If it still doesn’t work, try unblocking the other two dlls as well!
