Create animations, make Music Videos!
MikuMikuDance
MikuMikuDance is a free 3D animation software developed as a promotional element for fans of the Sony/Sega Vocaloid product. Featuring a high-style Japanese feel, MikuMikuDance has caught-on around the globe with tens of thousands of users and millions of MMD videos uploaded world-wide. The MMD program was introduced in Japan about 2007, without an English translation until 2010. The Japanese MMD Community is very strong and very active. They created a masterful collection of models, accessories and techniques for which all users today are most grateful!

INSTALL additional software (required) The VPVP page recommends that you download and install: Regular MikuMikuDance(32-Bit) 64-Bit MikuMikuDance It is critically important to have those packages installed in your system. MMD will not run properly without them, and will not accept higher versions of the same as a proper replacement¹. The majority of comments asking for help about MMD acting wrong will be countered with “Have you DirectX 9.0c and MS Visual C++ runtimes installed?” inquiry, and more likely than not, resolving these will resolve your problem as well. ¹ The above does not mean you have to rollback higher versions of these libraries (that you most probably have) in favor of more obsolete ones. Runtime packages are products specifically designed to be able for all versions to coexist on the same machine. |

The White Screen covering the Stage area?
Many users with newer Windows computers using the Intel Gen-12 processor report that MMD opens but the stage area is covered by a white screen. They can see model’s bones but cannot see the model. PLEASE SEE THIS TUTORIAL for a possible solution… seems to be a Driver issue… by adding the right Drivers, you may fix the issue!
We still have available for download the old 2010 release of the…
Original DirectX MMD 7.39 version:
Click the button to download the MikuMikuDanceE_v739.zip file from LearnMMD.com
MMD 7.39 runs great on XP computers and the newer systems, as well.
You can visit the VPVP page https://sites.google.com/view/evpvp/ and see what is there. MMD 7.39 used to be the Version 1.3 on that page. MMD 7.39 is removed and only the latest version of MMD is available there.
There is no “install” … just run it from your desktop. Have fun with it … Hurry back to LearnMMD.com for the information you need to get started with Miku Miku Dance.
You can Download Previous Versions of MMD…
LearnMMD.com still has EVERY version of DirectX MMD available for download… every version since 2010’s MMD 7.39 was released. You can download previous versions of MMD from LearnMMD.com
Upgrade DirectX_9 if you get the Missing DLL Error
In July of 2011, I found that I needed to upgrade to, at least, DirectX_9 … and I had a heck of a time finding it on the Microsoft Support pages.
This link at Microsoft is proven to work for all Windows versions … XP thru Windows 10 … I hope it works for you!
That DirectX runtime is now hosted on a Google-Drive page by VPVP.
IMPORTANT!
Most likely you have the higher version of DirectX installed on your computer by now. The common mistake is to update it to the latest release and expect it to solve your problems. Well, it won’t. MMD requires very specific files that are no longer distributed by default, so if you have the “missing dll problem“, you *need* to install the redistributable pack listed here. Do not worry, it won’t overwrite your newer DirectX install!
Fix the “Cannot find MMDxShow.dll” error
Download MMDxShow.dll Zip… Reggie’s personal copy!
Try this fix for the Cannot find MMDxShow.dll Error message. RENAME your old MMDxShow.dll file (if you have one) so you still have it in case this fix doesn’t work for you. Then download MMDxShow.dll from LearnMMD.com … drop it into your DATA folder inside the main MMD folder.

Additional software
Download an English version of PMX / PMD EDITOR
PMDE / PMXE is a software that lets you adjust or modify your MMD models. You can even create new models from scratch!
The last version of PMD Editor that we recommended was the 039 version by ibozo, available from his dA page. Though not perfect, it worked and was easy to use.
Today… we recommend PMXE ver. 0254f
PMXE in English: PMXE 0254f
Be sure to UNBLOCK the zip before you Extract all (just right-click the zip folder, choose “properties” and check UNBLOCK).
PLEASE NOTE: the PMD Editor is discontinued and won’t be updated past the ibozo 0139 version. PMXE is a continuation of PMDE, working with more advanced formats of MMD models and allowing loads of new possibilities! This new version of PMXE in English is more modern and offers many new features, so we recommend to learn it and preferably convert your models to .pmx format. The PMXE link above leads to a currently latest 0254f version of the editor, translated to English. If you prefer to use an unmodified Japanese version (or eager to check whether a newer release had been made since then), check PMXE’s Japanese home page, where you can always get the latest (but untranslated) release.
LearnMMD has many articles about using PMDE/PMXE!
Be a good MMDer, “Keep the Faith-MMD”.
Get MME v037 in English! … 32-bit or 64-bit!
with English Installation Instructions in English!
Reggie Dentmore has included all of the original files of the Japanese MikuMikuEffect V037 source zip and added English translation files and a new READ ME with installation instructions in English! There are also a couple of small GIF picture images to help with your installation. It’s not really MME in English … but it’s close! Included in that Read Me is the link to the Japanese source page … in case you’d like to visit and perhaps download your own MikuMikuEffects MME directly from the Japanese website.
IMPORTANT! If you use the 64-bit version of MMD, you *must*choose the 64-bit version of MME as well, and vice versa. Mismatched combinations will not work!
READ Reggie’s Article about MME V037!
To upgrade your old version of MME … simply replace the old DLL files with the new ones in this download.
LearnMMD.com still offers the previous version if you wish to own it. You can download the old Old MME v028 in English.
Mogg Face and Lips
The Mogg Project Face and Lips program helps you to create lip-syncs and VSQ files. LearnMMD has several articles that might help you to learn Face and Lips.
Blender
Blender is a 3D model-making software. It is extremely complicated and is NOT for the casual MMD beginner. You almost need a computer-science degree to understand how to work with it. If you download Blender, search online for the MANY tutorials about using Blender.
Please DO NOT ask LearnMMD for help with Blender; Blender is outside the focus of our work, here, on LearnMMD.
According to the Blender homepage, Blender is the free and open source 3D creation suite. It supports the entirety of the 3D pipeline—modeling, rigging, animation, simulation, rendering, compositing and motion tracking, even video editing and game creation.
If you download Blender, you will also want the latest version of the MMD TOOLS for Blender. Follow that link, Get MMD Tools, and read the info on that page. Again, LearnMMD offers no instruction for Blender and MMD Tools for Blender except as may be noted in our own model-making tutorials. If you download MMD Tools for Blender, please see its homepage for info, and do your research on Google and Deviant Art.
DOWNLOAD MikuMikuMoving from LearnMMD.com!!
MikuMikuMoving is a “competitor” to MikuMikuDance. MMM has some features not available in MMD. MikuMikuMoving will not play your existing PMM dance animation files … but it DOES use the same motion and model files. It also uses its own brand of effects … most of MMD’s MME effects won’t work in MMM. There is a list of MMM effects on the Moggproject homepage. … See the MMM Articles on LearnMMD … and visit the LearnMMD MMM Page.
DOWNLOAD MMM MikuMikuMoving…
Readers report difficulty downloading MMM from it’s MoggProject home page. I see in the README that Redistribution is allowed… so LearnMMD.com is hosting the latest version of MMM (latest version as of 3/5/2020)…

Download GIMP 2.6 Photo and Image Manipulation Program
GIMP is a freeware program that easily creates animated GIF files. It is powerful software that is able to produce fine images rivaling the quality of Adobe Photoshop.
The buttons and controls do not follow the same scheme followed in Photoshop … so … if you are a hard-core Photoshop user like I am … you will probably become totally frustrated with GIMP! Newbies with no Photoshop experience will probably run GIMP without a problem “:o). All of the instructions and documentation is online. Try it out. Enjoy!

and the “.X” plug-in for it:
Click the button to go to Google’s SketchUp page and get your free download of this powerful tool. Click the next button, too, to get the Plug-In that let’s you save objects for MMD.
Click the button to get the “3D Rad Exporter plug-in” for SketchUp that lets SketchUp save drawings as DirectX file objects for MMD Accessories.
I can no longer find that plugin online, so I am hosting it right here, on LearnMMD.com. Click that button to get my personal file. You will need to drop that plugin into the Plugins folder inside the actual Program folder. Go to My Computer… C drive, Programs, find your Sketchup folder, open it and see the Plugins folder. Add my file to that folder. Sketchup will now see it as a plugin.
Again… This is NOT an installable Plugin, YOU have to install it, yourself: When you download that file, you have to install it manually. Drop that .rbs file into the Plugins folder inside the actual Google/Sketchup folder inside your computer’s Programs folder. My Computer>C:>Programs>Google>Sketchup>Plugins. After doing so, you can close everything, start Sketchup, and Sketchup will now see the plugin.

Download Reggie’s DeckPanel!
Use this accessory to give your models a place to stand when the motion data starts your model somewhere above the stage-floor! See the descriptive article about using Reggie’s DeckPanel.

I found this WAV file here:
… or just click the button.
There is no documentation for this file. I don’t know who made it or where it came from … but it seems to be the standard Leek-Spin song and it works just fine with the MMD program. You will find that it lasts about 4440 Frames! Save it where you can easily find it. Open a NEW file in MMD and then click FILE and LOAD WAV FILE. Select your file. You will then see it on the oscilloscope window on the MMD panel.
Have fun and Practice, Practice, Practice! “:o).

Fine movements are possible with MMD. I wanted to have quick access to various hand poses and finger positions … so I created a set of VPD files that I could use and share with you.
See: Reggie’s Hand Pose Collection for details.
Try them out! When you get my ZIP file, click EXTRACT ALL, open the new folder and Select All of my poses, and drop them into your Pose Folder inside your Users Folder in MMD. When you use them … you will see that some of the hand poses may poke a finger or thumb through a model’s sleeve. You can adjust the sleeve positions or flex the character’s wrist to get away from that. Have fun with ‘em!

Let’s Make Miku Walk! Download my WalkTest6RD.pmm animation
I created this walking motion with 5 full strides … 10 steps. See it here: Make Miku Walk!
It is pretty good … and since it is a .pmm file you can run it and edit it … have fun with it.
Please rename the file if you make changes to it.
See the write-up and learn how I created this animation on this page: Make Miku Walk!
My new WalkTest8 file shows that Walking is getting easier!
My new walk test file is cleaner than my previous motion file. See it at https://learnmmd.com/EasyWalk . I started by sliding the model back a bit so the toes are on a ruled line … registered. Then I moved out 15 frames and advanced the Center and the Left Leg IK to the next line. Registered. I COPIED the Left Leg IK position. I then went out 15 frames and PASTED that Left Leg IK data. Then I moved the Center and the Right Leg IK out to the next ruled line, registered, and COPIED the Right Leg IK position. Advanced another 15 … and so on. This created a nice sliding/skating motion. Then I went back and added some foot and hip action. Go ahead and download this little file and play it for yourself!
hello this is my very first comment after coming across the comment of a Mac user who wants to install MMD on his machine we all know that MMD only works on windows but don’t worry I have the solution you just have to ‘install windows on a virtual machine such as VirtualBox you will find on Youtube lots of tutorials that show you how to install windows on virtualbox I hope to have helped you with this comment ^^
Thank you! … I have seen several solutions involving running MMD on a Mac using a virtual machine… usually a Windows 7 emulator. I hope that your method works for others as well as it has for you!
Hi, I would like to start an open-source project to try to develop a mac version for mmd. Would it be okay or is it against the copyrights? I understand it might be difficult or nearly impossible but it’s worth a try with the new macs with better graphics support ;)
Against Copyright? I don’t know. The original creator was Yu Higuchi and the software was developed as the Vocaloid Promotional Video Project… VPVP and when you got to that source page… the VPVP page, there is no mention of copyright or, really, any kind of control. In the upper left of that page is a link to the Japanese language page… visit THAT page to see how much more developed that page is when compared to the English page.
And… who will stop you from developing that project? … no one. … I say give it a try! … keep me informed of your progress and I can write about it here, on LearnMMD.com
— Reggie
This website is goated. Any newcomer (like me) will get everything they need to start MMD’ing. Kudos to the creator and those who help.
Btw, silly question, where can I get more models/accessories to use with MMD? I’d like to make a gun action scene but I don’t have anything and I really don’t know where to get them.
You will find almost anything if you go looking for it. Just Google it… I searched for MMD ar-15
… and I got https://www.deviantart.com/croquemr/art/MMD-AR-15-M16A1-Custom-WIP-Exported-767910030
Hi, I want to run MMD and PMX editor, I have everything installed, I just don’t know where to put directx_Jun2010_redist. I have MS Windows 11, an Asus VivoBook laptop, intel core i 3… It’s not a gamer’s PC, but it’s not some s**t either. When I started the installation, a table came up asking where it should be placed. I couldn’t find the TMP folder and I don’t want to risk misplacing it. By the way, is it necessary to install DirectX 9 Runtime as well…? It also turned out that I was missing: d3dx9_43.dll. And that reinstalling the program can fix the problem. I downloaded everything from this website that was listed as necessary for MMD to work, but maybe I’m missing something? I am a complete beginner in MMD and would like to work on some result. Alternatively, thanks for the advice and help.
Hello! … Congratulations on all you have done so far! … When that table came up asking where to place the DirectX, you should tell it to put it in the TMP folder. There IS no TMP folder,so, before you start, you have to make a TMP folder using “Create New Folder” on your C Drive.
…
and Yes, the DirectX 9c is the one that contains the DLLs that MMD is looking for. That is the one linked to from my Downloads page.
Best wishes… best of luck… Please stay in contact… let me know how you are doing. OK to send me email at [email protected]
— Reggie
Hi,
thank you for your help. Everything looks fine, I don’t even seem to be missing anything, but it keeps telling me : MikuMikuDance.exe – System error ; The code execution cannot proceed because d3dx9_43.dll was not found. Reinstalling the program may fix this problem.
I even tried reinstalling, but without success. Besides this, other things seems to be alright.
You have a 32bytes sistem or a 64bytes sistem?
I am running the 64-bit MMD and MME… my Windows 10 computer is 64-bit.
I use a ASUS Vivobook on Win 11 aswell! Did you make a folder in C: titled “TMP”? And selected that folder to install DirectX9?
Hello! Does MMD run well on your Win 11 ASUS Vivobook? … just wondering… Thank you!
Hii i really like MMD but i cant save my video..(
Can’t save your video… Do you use Render to AVI under the File menu? Do you have any of the codecs installed… UTvideo or K-Lite mega?
Thank you! Although I started playing MMD 1years ago, your website still helps me a lot. I think my country also need a web like yours, it’s really really good for beginners! And everyone should read the “Keep the Faith-MMD”I think. Maybe my English seems strange, because I ‘m not a native English speaker.
Thank you for your kind words! Your comment is much appreciated.
Hopefully some day an updated version of MMD for 2020+ will come out. Been using MMD for years and would love to see a new version of the program
I don’t know… I am not expecting an update. As long as we can keep coming up with work-arounds allowing us to create with MMD, I am a happy camper. Who’d of thought that a little animation program from 2010 would be so popular twelve years later?!
I do not know about “all fuzzy”. Please describe step-by-step what you are doing. … Render to AVI… name your file… then you select your Codec. Which codec do you select? Anything else?
— Reggie
Sorry I haven’t been more explicit. Well I’ll explain step by step what I do…
After the Project I want to make is ready, I click on the ‶file‶ option, then I go to the ‶render to AVI file‶ option, and then I put the name of the project.
Then it opens that little window ‶AVI out‶, I put the ‶AVI size‶, normally I put 16×9 in size. I set the ‶frame rate‶, which is always 0 to the number of frames the project has. For example the project I’m working on now has 3202 frames.
And then I select the ‶video compressor‶ I want to use. I normally use ‶AVI Raw‶ , but in the beginning, when I started making MMD, I used ‶MJPEG Compressor‶. After that I hit ‶ok‶, and it starts rendering.
In the past it worked well and all, and the video came out really well, I’ve done a lot that came out well. But now when it starts rendering, it doesn’t open that window anymore, that render window, it is minimized and won’t let me open it. Only if I Cancel the rendering, it opens again, but if I don’t cancel it, it renders and such, but the video comes out all dim, as if they had put a giant censor in the entire video, you can’t see anything, the only thing you see is the colors of your character moving in that whole dusk, but the sound comes out well, without any flaws. Att: If that sounds weird it’s because of google translate.
Wow. When my MMD animation is finished. I Render to AVI. The navigation window opens so I can name my file and the destination. Then that gray window pops up and I change nothing except I select my Compressor. and I push OK to start the render.
Your AVI size is already determined by your MMD setup… Under View menu you have already set the Screen Size. If you don’t like the size and want to change it, do that in that Screen Size window under the VIEW menu. The Frame Rate is how many frames per second and MMD normally defaults to 30 frames per second. So, leave that value at 30. Then select your compressor. You can choose RAW or some other one.
I hope that helps!

Thank you very much Reggie Dentmore. I really didn’t expect to be answered by my biggest fan in the mmd world. But I did. And I’m so glad you helped me, I’ll try your advice. God bless you.

I just want to bring something to your attention regarding a HARDWARE compatibility issue for MMD.
I work with an MMD help server on Discord, and we’ve now seen a couple people come to us with a blank white rectangle obscuring the camera. All they can see is the red dot marking the camera’s center, the model’s bones (in the appropriate view mode), and maybe a tiny sliver of the view at the edge of the screen. Switching to Full Screen mode fixes it, but then that obscures the key frames, facial sliders, and other important stuff.
This seems to be a compatibility issue with Intel’s new Gen 12 core processors. Everyone who has had this issue so far is using a computer with a Gen 12 processor. (And these core processors have made some headlines because of compatibility issues with older programs.)
MikuMikuMoving appears to be unaffected.
Thank you for that note! I have had two readers report that “white screen” situation… as if a white panel is in front of the GUI’s stage window. First Report was August 25th and second report August 28th. … I will contact them to see what computer system they are running… and will reply back when I hear something.
We have had a third person come to our Discord group with this issue since I first told you about it. Their new computer is also using Intel gen 12 core processors. Their OLD computer, however, can run MMD just fine and is using an AMD processor.
I guess that’s the answer… that Intel Gen 12 processor is our problem… “They” have to fix something or “we” need to develop a patch… I will be no help with that… I know nothing about it. … There are a ton of old DirectX games enthusiasts out there… I hope they can discover something that will help us.
— Reggie
Raising awareness is the first step towards finding that fix or patch. Every little bit helps.
Last question. How to convert PMD to PMX ?
Super easy… Open your PMD model in PMXEditor… and SAVE AS a PMX model. … The 0254 PMXE Version will not let you SAVE as a PMD, I don’t think.

Thank you admin. Very helpful. It seems i don’t have any major problems,
Now for minor problems is
is there shortcut for “register keyframe” ?
What’s the question? … You can click REGISTER in the Bone Manipulation Panel… or click Enter… When I am creating my own motions. I usually have my left index finger hovering over the Enter key… so I move the bone and click Enter.
Hello. I have a question. What does format file of accessories MMD use ? Can i use OBJ Format ? where i can create custom accessories ?
MMD accessories are in the DirectX .x file format. You will need to figure-out how to export your .obj files as .x
can you make some tutorial of making mmd with charastudio/koikatsu? i seen a alot people using it now
I am not familiar with that software… I will check into it!
— Reggie
i entered mmd after move the 3 files of dll from mme but the button wouldnt appeared… do i have to download something more?
Hello… No… I see in your image that you have done it correctly… Be sure that the MME you downloadeded is a match for MMD… either 32-bit or 64-bit… they must match. … But… dropping the three DLLs into your MMD folder, the same folder as mikumikudance.exe, should do the job.
— Reggie
Fuck you. This software is bvullshit. No errors. No nothing. It simply is a broken exe. You are a fucking crook and a liar.
Thank you for that… if you want some assiastance with troubleshooting your issues, please let me know.

hi, i have a problem to open MMD , when ever i open it it says error and its side by side configuration isincorrect but i download microsoft visual c++ 2008, 2006, 2014,2015and 2022 ,i have set those to the laptop but idk why it doesnt work
By “set” do you mean that you can see them in Windows’ Apps&Features list? If you just downloaded files from Microsoft without installing, it does not count. Also, do you have exactly those versions (both of them) that is mentioned for your version of MMD, 32 or 64-bit?
im not sure what do u mean. i already installed and “set” it to the system, that what i meant it
Did you go to see that they are properly installed… as in that view I showed you?
— Reggie
yeah i did and they all installed but mmd wont open to me ;( do i have to download directX ?
It would be easier if you just posted your own screenshot of Windows’ Apps&Features with all listed MS VC++ libraries, so we could see what you do have and what you don’t.
As for DirectX – yes, you may need that if you don’t have these files in Windows/System32 (numbered from 24 to 43):
… but the side-to-side error does not depend on that. It’s specifically a VC thing.
here
i tried to open mmd again but system told me its better to download it on microsoft store
i tried to open mmd again but the system told me its better to download it on microsoft store
“System, go home, you’re drunk”.
Assuming the version of MMD you’ve downloaded is 64-bit, you still miss the 2008 x64 version of VC++.
Good “morning” KB…
it works thank u soooooooo much
I do not see the 2008 C++ in your list… download it here.
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=26368
… and then run it.
— Reggie
thank uu soooo much for helping me
So glad you got it!
You may need the assistance of a local computer guru… a knowledgeable friend or a service-center.
Here is what’s on MY computer… yours may be different… but see that I have the required C++ installed…
— Reggie
i download the 64-bit version
when we download the VC, do we have to download the x86 too? yesterday i tried and it work somehow, but the mme wont appeared so i tried to fix the mmd but today i occured the side-by-side error
No… if you downloaded the 64-bit version of MMD, you only need those two 64-bit C++ 64-bit… forgetting about MME (maybe remove those DLLs from the MMD folder) does MMD open for you?
— Reggie
it open now! now i download the mme but the button doesnt appeared…
Be sure that the MME you downloaded matches your MMD… 32-bit or 64-bit. … there is no “trick” to it… dropping the three DLLs into your MMD folder should do the trick.
